DavenportU Citizens Academy with Allie McWilliams

DavenportU Citizens Academy is a ten-session program aimed at connecting citizens to their local government. If you have ever been curious about how the City prioritizes projects or how heavy a firefighters turnout gear is – this academy could be for you!

“I look forward to meeting Davenport’s most engaged citizens in each year’s cohort,” said Davenport Mayor Mike Matson. “Even long-time residents of Davenport can learn something new at DavenportU.”

Each session of DavenportU takes citizens behind the scenes of City government with interactive experiences, tours, and presentations. From community and economic development to public safety and parks, DavenportU participants move around the City to learn about the inner workings of each department. DavenportU concludes with a graduation ceremony at the City Council Meeting on May 28, 2025.

Online Reading Challenge

Stephanie has a new amazing theme this year for our annual Online Reading Challenge (ORC). For those new to ORC, this is a low stakes, high fun reading challenge that allows members to participate from the comfort of their own home and consume whatever they would like just as long as it fits the monthly prompt. This challenge originated in this blog and has since grown to also be available through beanstack!

2025 Rock Island Arsenal Series

Join us for a monthly lecture series commemorating the 250th anniversary of the creation of the United States Army in 1775. All talks in this series are presented by a member of Army Sustainment Command’s Office of the Historian, based on the Arsenal

This program is jointly hosted by the Davenport Public Library and the Rock Island Public Library. If you are unable to attend the Davenport Public Library’s session, another session will be offered earlier in the day at 2:00 PM at Rock Island Public Library.

Self-Improvement Month

September is self-improvement month and The Library is here to help with some of our newer resources! 

The Library now has LinkedIn Learning: Login with your library card number and password for your account to access 16,000+ expert-led courses presented in seven languages. Course subjects include: small business and entrepreneurship, web development, Microsoft Office, Google docs, photography, video editing, public speaking, sales, marketing, and many more. 

Have you been meaning to learn a new language or polish those sophomore year Spanish skills? Mango language has you covered! This language-learning resource offers instructional courses for over 70 languages. Begin to develop or build upon your listening and speaking skills in one or more foreign languages. Includes ESL (English as a Second Language) for over 20 languages.

Every year, ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) compiles a list of the Top 10 Most Challenged Books in order to inform the public about censorship in libraries and schools. The lists are based on information from reports filed by library professionals and community members, as well as news stories published throughout the United States. QCL August Wrap-Up

In August, Morgan and I read Don’t Forget to Write by Sara Goodman Confino to celebrate Family Fun Month. Below is a short synopsis of the book and what I thought of it! 

When Marilyn is discovered making out with the Rabbi’s son in front of the congregation, her parents are distraught. Afraid their reputation will be ruined, Marilyn’s parents send her off to her great aunt’s house in Philadelphia for the summer until the scandal dissipates. Marilyn knows nothing of her great aunt before arriving at her home but soon discovers that Aunt Ada is not at all what she expected.

The pair journey to the Jersey Shore for the summer and unlock a bond like no other.

This book was beautiful and sad and I am so, so glad that I read it!!

QCL July Wrap-Up

In July, Morgan and I read The Echo of Old Books by Barbara Davis to celebrate Cheer Up the Lonely Day on July 11th. Below is a short synopsis of the book and what I thought of it! 

Ashlyn operates a used book shop in New Hampshire. Ashlyn has a special ability to sense the echo of the previous owners of the books in her store. When a mysterious beautifully bound book, with no author or publisher listed, lands in Ashlyn’s hands and later a companion, she becomes entranced by the books and must find out where they came from.

This beautiful book told in 3 points of view was exactly what I needed! I don’t want to give too much away so I am going to leave it there!
