
{"id":6949,"date":"2016-06-24T17:28:51","date_gmt":"2016-06-24T22:28:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs2.davenportlibrary.com\/sc\/?p=6949"},"modified":"2016-06-24T17:30:41","modified_gmt":"2016-06-24T22:30:41","slug":"quad-cities-museum-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/sc\/2016\/06\/24\/quad-cities-museum-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Quad Cities Museum Week 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Celebrate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qcmuseumweek.com\/#sort=&amp;type=&amp;city=\" target=\"_blank\">Quad Cities Museum Week<\/a> (June 18-26th) with us by taking a look at the\u00a0history of the associations between two of Davenport&#8217;s well-loved cultural and educational institutions: the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.putnam.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Putnam Museum and Science Center<\/a>\u00a0and the <a href=\"http:\/\/figgeartmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Figge Art Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Davenport Academy of Sciences, predecessor to the Putnam, began\u00a0December 14, 1867, when four amateur scientists and collectors of area natural history specimens met to discuss how they might advance knowledge in the\u00a0scientific communities both locally and worldwide.\u00a0The public&#8217;s first view of the Academy&#8217;s collections came in 1874, when member Mary Louisa Duncan Putnam\u00a0arranged for their display in\u00a0rented rooms in the Odd Fellows building on Brady Street. In honor of her dying son Joseph Duncan&#8217;s benefit from (and\u00a0dedication to) the\u00a0Academy, Mary worked tirelessly to raise funds for a museum building. The W. C. Putnam estate provided major support for the project.<\/p>\n<p>This Municipal Art Gallery catalog from our ephemera collection shows the newly-minted campus in 1964.
