
{"id":685,"date":"2009-05-04T08:40:53","date_gmt":"2009-05-04T13:40:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs2.davenportlibrary.com\/sc\/?p=685"},"modified":"2014-01-15T15:48:53","modified_gmt":"2014-01-15T21:48:53","slug":"were-number-one-davenport-firsts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/sc\/2009\/05\/04\/were-number-one-davenport-firsts\/","title":{"rendered":"We&#8217;re Number One:  Davenport Firsts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We felt like bragging this week, so we&#8217;ve brought out a brief list of some of the statewide or national things that happened first in Davenport.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0In rough chronological order:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The first locomotive in Iowa was delivered in Davenport on July 20, 1855.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The first Railroad bridge over the Mississippi River was finished in April of 1856.\u00a0 On May 6, two weeks later, the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/sc\/?p=127\">Effie Afton<\/a><\/em> became the first steamboat to collide with a Mississippi River railroad bridge.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0In 1858, Abraham S. Kissell was appointed Superintendent of the newly formed Davenport and Scott County schools system, becoming the first school superintendent in Iowa.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.qcmemory.org\/Default.aspx?PageId=238&amp;nt=207&amp;nt2=229\">Phebe W. Sudlow<\/a> was possibly the first woman principal of a public school in the United States (promoted in 1859) and was definitely the first female superintendent of schools in Iowa&#8212;and perhaps also the United States (appointed in 1874).*\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.umvphotoarchive.org\/cdm4\/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=\/scdpl&amp;CISOPTR=148&amp;REC=6\">First National Bank of Davenport<\/a> was the first US Bank to open under the National Banking Act of 1863.\u00a0 The bank secured the very first certificate issued by the United States under the new Act.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The first recorded appendectomy in the United States was performed at Mercy Hospital in 1883.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/sc\/?p=462\">Crescent Macaroni Company<\/a>, built in 1894, was the first macaroni manufacturer in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0D.D. Palmer made the first chiropractic adjustment in Davenport on <strong>September 18, 1895, <\/strong>and later established <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/sc\/?p=251\">Palmer College of Chiropractic<\/a>, the first of its kind in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Alexander F.
