One of our favorite books in our collection is\u00a0A portfolio of cartoons as published by the Davenport Times 1912-13<\/a>. As the title suggests, it contains a series of caricatures of prominent Davenport citizens that were published in the local newspaper just over 100 years ago. The cartoons were accompanied by short descriptive\u00a0poems\u00a0written by Irving C. Norwood.<\/a><\/p>\n

While browsing through the cartoons, we noticed not only several\u00a0successful men, but their successful sons as well.\u00a0In honor of Father’s Day, we would\u00a0like to share with your some of those pages (and another sketch from our photograph collection). We’ve added full names, birth and death years, and career paths below the sketch.<\/p>\n

– Congressman Joe R. Lane of Lane & Waterman was also VP of First National Bank.<\/p>\n

– J. Reed Lane<\/a>, like his father,\u00a0was also a lawyer and\u00a0associated with many companies.<\/p>\n

James Reed Lane (1889-1955), lawyer, son of Joe R. Lane.<\/p><\/div>\n

– G.W. French was president of French & Hecht<\/a>\u00a0and lived at Iowana Farms.<\/p>\n

\"George<\/a>

George Watson French (1858-1934), manufacturer, father of George Decker French<\/p><\/div>\n

– G. Decker French was president of Central Engineering Company.<\/p>\n

George Decker French (1887-1959), contractor, son of George Watson French<\/p><\/div>\n

– Author A. D. Ficke\u00a0was not included in the book like father C. A. Ficke. This etching of\u00a0A. D. Ficke\u00a0was made by Josef Pierre Nuyttens in 1914.<\/p>\n
