
{"id":3937,"date":"2012-08-24T14:48:23","date_gmt":"2012-08-24T19:48:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs2.davenportlibrary.com\/sc\/?p=3937"},"modified":"2012-09-04T14:50:33","modified_gmt":"2012-09-04T19:50:33","slug":"just-shelved-quad-city-times-newspaper-index-to-social-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/sc\/2012\/08\/24\/just-shelved-quad-city-times-newspaper-index-to-social-events\/","title":{"rendered":"Just Shelved: Quad-City Times Newspaper Index to Social Events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the first things a genealogist learns is how to find obituaries, which usually appear in the local newspapers within two or three days after the date of death, if the deceased was a current resident.<\/p>\n<p>One of the second things a genealogist learns is how <em>frustrating <\/em>it can be to find marriage announcements and other social events, which can appear in local newspapers <em>months<\/em> afterward, or even <em>before<\/em> the date of the event.<\/p>\n<p>And as much as we love microfilm, it doesn\u2019t make it any easier on the eyes or the carpal tunnel to go through months and months of newspapers page-by-page.<\/p>\n<p>But Pat Scott and Sandy Luse of the Scott County, Iowa Genealogy Society, have solved this problem for those of us trying to search the <em>Quad-City Times<\/em> between 1994 and 1999.\u00a0 They\u2019ve gathered and indexed all those elusive marriage, engagement, and anniversary announcements \u00a0published during that time period\u2014they even gathered <em>birthday<\/em> announcements:<\/p>\n<p>Volume 1: <em>Marriages, 1994-1996<\/em> (alphabetical by groom)<\/p>\n<p>Volume 2:<em> Marriages, 1994-1996<\/em> (alphabetical by bride)<\/p>\n<p>Volume 3: <em>Birthdays, 1994-1996<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Volume 4: <em>Marriages, 1996-1999 (<\/em>alphabetical by groom)<\/p>\n<p>Volume 5: <em>Marriages, 1996-1999 (<\/em>alphabetical by bride)<\/p>\n<p>Volume 6: <em>Birthdays and Miscellaneous Events, 1996-1999<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This six volume set (located under <em>977.769 QUAD CIT) <\/em>is an incredible time saver\u2014and as all the listings include the full date of the <em>original event<\/em> whenever available, it\u2019s an important informational resource all by itself.<\/p>\n<p>We can\u2019t thank Ms. Scott and Ms. Luse enough for all their hard work\u2014and we can\u2019t wait to start using the amazing results of their labor!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the first things a genealogist learns is how to find obituaries, which usually appear in the local newspapers within two or three days after the date of death, if the deceased was a current resident.
