Presents opened to joyful laughter. Special breakfasts, brunches, and of course the traditional dinner. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Christmas 1920.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Along with all the happiness of the day was the excitement of the thought of going to the grand opening of the new Capitol theater in the new Kahl Building\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0Third Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The weather was not the best. There was a heavy snow storm that started about noon.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The snow was blowing about, but that did not hinder between 10,000-11,000 (estimated) p<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">eople from making their way<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>to see the new theater.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in -4.5pt 0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The\u00a0Capitol opened at noon and stayed open all afternoon<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 and <\/span>into the night. Theater parties were thrown during the day. H.C. Kahl, the owner of the building where the new theater was, had one for over 100 people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in -4.5pt 0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in -4.5pt 0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The new theater cost $900,000 and was leased by the Capitol Theater Co.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>had the splender of an oriental palace and the art and charm of the chateaux of Louis XIV and was so designed that the orchestra and stage could be converted into a \u2018legitimate\u2019 Theater with full stage at any time.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Theater even had a nursery equipped as playroom with a maid in attendance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in -4.5pt 0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in -4.5pt 0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The climate within the theater was kept comfortable, as the heat and air were automatically adjusted. Since safety was of great importance, the projection room was fireproof&#8211;evidently, the type of film used at that time was very flammable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in -4.5pt 0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in -4.5pt 0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Many well wishers sent flowers which were placed around the theater. A Christmas Tree stood in the lobby.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>But, unlike the opening of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/sc\/?p=359\" target=\"_blank\">RKO Orpheum Theater<\/a> eleven years later, there was no grand fanfare at the opening, just a simple ceremony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in -4.5pt 0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in -4.5pt 0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">I suppose they were just letting the theater speak for itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in -4.5pt 0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in -4.5pt 0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The main movie of the evening was \u201cThe Man Who Lost Himself\u201d with William Faversham.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in -4.5pt 0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">The second feature was a comedy with Clyde Cook called \u201cDon\u2019t Tickle.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>These were silent movies as Talkies did not start until 1927.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>The background music for the movies were provided by Claude MacArthur and the Capitol sympathy orchestra.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The organ, one of the largest in the country, was played by Mr. William Kraft.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in -4.5pt 0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in -4.5pt 0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The Capitol is still in existence today, although no longer used as a regular movie theater.\u00a0\u00a0However, movies are still whown for special programs and the theater<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"> is still used for\u00a0plays, concerts,\u00a0and other\u00a0entertainments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in -4.5pt 0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-left: 30px; margin: 0in -4.5pt 0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Theater Statistics:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-left: 30px; margin: 0in -4.5pt 0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Seating capacity of theater \u20132,400<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-left: 30px; margin: 0in -4.5pt 0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Cost\u2014$900,000<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-left: 30px; margin: 0in -4.5pt 0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Owner and builder\u2014H.C.
