
{"id":268,"date":"2008-10-06T08:49:59","date_gmt":"2008-10-06T13:49:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs2.davenportlibrary.com\/sc\/?p=268"},"modified":"2014-01-15T15:49:58","modified_gmt":"2014-01-15T21:49:58","slug":"skeletons-in-your-closet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/sc\/2008\/10\/06\/skeletons-in-your-closet\/","title":{"rendered":"Skeletons in your Closet?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">As Autumn descends on our fair city, temperatures drop, trees turn their leaves, squirrels gather acorns and other goodies for their long winter naps, and even our houses settle in for the coming Winter.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">Older houses, of which Davenport has many, are especially susceptible to the changing seasons.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The creaks and groans of beams and floors lend an eerie soundtrack to the early evenings, while drafts from older windows trail a spooky finger across the back of one\u2019s neck.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>All this reminds one that Halloween will soon be here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">It is no wonder that this is the time of year when people come to the library to research their homes. And that when we ask them what kind of information most interests them, quite a few lean forward and whisper that what they <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">really<\/em> want to know is if anyone ever died in the house.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">Unfortunately, our Scott County death records are arranged by name, not address, so unless the name of the deceased is known, this resource can\u2019t help.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>So how to find the name \u2013or names?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">City <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>directories can provide the names of the adults who lived in a particular house each year.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>When someone stops being listed in the directory, the usual explanation is that he or she moved on . . . or passed away.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>If one were to look up the name of that person in the death records for the years surrounding the year he or she was last listed in the directory, one might find a death record, which<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>would give the address of the place of death.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>If a death record is not found for that person, he or she didn\u2019t die in Scott County during those years and the researcher can move on to the next person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">The researcher might keep in mind that while this is a way to locate the death of someone who is listed in the city directory, some residents of a house, such as minor children, spouses, or even boarders, may not be listed.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Federal or State Census records can supply the names of everyone living in a particular household in the year the census was taken.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>If a person \u2018disappears\u2019 between census years, cemetery and tombstone indexes, County probate records, and other resources may confirm a death and narrow a death date enough for the researcher to locate the death record.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">And of course, all of these methods assume that the person who might have died in the house actually lived there.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>If someone passed away while visiting, unless the name of the person was known, it would be very difficult to track down the death record, or any newspaper articles related to the death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">But even if our available resources can\u2019t help you discover literal skeletons in your closet*, they can help you find out more about the rest of your house.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We even made a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/sc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/house-research-pdf.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">brochure<\/a> about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;
