
{"id":251,"date":"2008-09-15T11:30:40","date_gmt":"2008-09-15T16:30:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs2.davenportlibrary.com\/sc\/?p=251"},"modified":"2014-01-15T15:49:58","modified_gmt":"2014-01-15T21:49:58","slug":"happy-anniverary-chiropractic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/sc\/2008\/09\/15\/happy-anniverary-chiropractic\/","title":{"rendered":"Happy Anniverary, Chiropractic!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">As we in the Quad-Cities finish cleaning up after this summer of high waters and strong winds, many of us will have cause to be grateful for the Palmer College of Chiropractic and their dedicated graduates who have kept our backs on the straight and narrow for over a hundred years.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">It is therefore fitting to note that this Friday marks the anniversary of the first chiropractic adjustment, which took place in Davenport on September 18, 1895.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Ten years prior, Daniel David Palmer brought his family to Davenport and set up a magnetic healing practice.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Magnetic healers believed that the human body had the innate ability to maintain wellness, and D.D. used non-surgical or non-medicinal methods to help his patients\u2019 own systems cure their illnesses.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">As he continued to examine patients with a wide range of complaints, D.D. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>began to theorize that disease was caused or worsened by maladjustments to the spinal column.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>These maladjustments interfered with nerve impulses and so blocked the body\u2019s ability to heal itself.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He continued to refine his theories and methods until one day he was able to put them into practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">As one story goes*, D.D. was in the building of his clinic, when he overheard two men swapping a loud joke in the hall and paused to listen.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The joke was a knee-slapper, and someone, perhaps D.D. himself, did clap one of the men, Harvey Lillard, on the back before going on his way.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Soon after, however, Mr. Lillard came to the clinic and told D. D. a very interesting story.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">It seems that Mr. Lillard, a janitor in the clinic\u2019s building, had been working one day when something had popped in his back, and found that he could no longer hear well.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>His condition had worsened, and he had been virtually deaf for almost seventeen years.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He then told D.D. that the morning after he had been recently slapped on the back, he found that he could hear a little better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Intrigued, D. D. invited Mr.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Lillard into the clinic and checked his spine.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He did find the bump of a misplaced vertebra and forced it back into place. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>To the delight of both men, Mr. Lillard\u2019s hearing immediately improved. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Encouraged by this validation of his theories, D.D. searched for similar misalignments among his other patients.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He tried the same methods he had used to adjust Mr. Lillard\u2019s spine, with much the same success.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The word was passed among his well-adjusted patients, and the popularity of D.D.\u2019s clinic grew.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">By the following January, D.D. decided that his methods and theories needed a name.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>He turned to a patient of his, Reverend Samuel H.
