They were worried that it was too easily confused with Davenport\u2019s City Cemetery, which was also located on the west part of town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: left;\">How did they decide on a new name? They had a contest!<\/p>\n<p class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The\u00a0directors of\u00a0the\u00a0Association invited the public to submit suggestions until noon on August 5<sup>th<\/sup>. The person who submitted the winning name would receive a \u201cgood\u201d burial lot in the newly named cemetery!<\/p>\n<p class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The board of directors met on August 6<sup>th<\/sup> to pick the\u00a0new name. The\u00a0next day, the <em>Davenport Democrat<\/em>\u00a0reported that there was a long list to choose from and more time was needed. The Association had\u00a0received 175 entries from various places across the country, including New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Chicago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Of all of the names submitted, the early front-runner was \u201cGrand View Cemetery\u201d. But the directors couldn\u2019t\u00a0decide so they appointed a committee to study the suggestions and report at a later time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: left;\">On August 29<sup>th<\/sup>, the newspapers reported that a name had been selected. Many of the entries made reference to the \u201cview\u201d from the place. However, the directors were partial to names that referred to the location, like \u201cFairmount\u201d, \u201cGreenmount\u201d and \u201cGreenwood\u201d. The directors decided that they liked \u201cFairmount\u201d best.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Since three different people had written in suggesting that particular name, the directors pulled\u00a0the winner out of a hat. The lucky\u00a0recipient of the \u201cgood\u201d\u00a0plot at\u00a0 Fairmount Cemetery was none other than Miss Freda Schricker, 15-year-old daughter of J. C. Schricker,\u00a0secretary of the West Davenport Cemetery Association.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Freda Schricker died on July 18, 1986, at the age of 99. If you are interested in locating\u00a0her choice burial lot, you won\u2019t find it at Fairmount Cemetery.\u00a0Miss Schricker was buried at Oakdale Cemetery beside\u00a0her mother and father.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: left;\">What&#8217;s more, the Oakdale Cemetery sectional book states that John C.
