Petrow (1915) to piano arrangements for some of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qcmemory.org\/Default.aspx?PageId=233&amp;nt=207&amp;nt2=229\">Bix Beiderbecke&#8217;s<\/a> pieces.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Davenport Centennial March<\/em>, written by Herman Schmidt in 1936 and Albert Petersen&#8217;s the <em>Mississippi Valley Fair Boosters March song<\/em> (1924) were written for specific celebrations. \u00a0\u00a0<em>The Wild Rose of Iowa, <\/em>by Erwin Swindell, and Bix&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/sc\/?p=80\">Davenport Blues<\/a><\/em> are sentimental commentary.\u00a0 But they all use music to describe our area and our people during the time they were created.<\/p>\n<p>Our uncatalogued ephemera\u00a0files include many, many\u00a0past and present Official Songs of Iowa, including <em>Iowa, Beautiful Land<\/em> by Horace Towner, who later, became the governor of Puerto Rico.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Not all of our music was commercially published.\u00a0 Kent Gannett\u00a0 (1887-1967) taught vocal music at Davenport High School (now Central) from 1924 to his retirement\u00a0 at the end of the 1952 school year. \u00a0\u00a0He was an accomplished composer and musician and won awards for his work.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Before his death, Mr. Gannett donated his compositions and arrangements&#8212;most of which were performed between 1940 and 1960&#8212;to the Davenport Public Library.\u00a0 These scores run from original symphonies to whimsical pieces with names like <em>At the Supermarket (With Squeaky Cart)<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, if you&#8217;re interested in not only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.umvphotoarchive.org\/cdm4\/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=\/scdpl&amp;CISOPTR=1691&amp;CISOBOX=1&amp;REC=2\">seeing<\/a> history, but hearing it, why not visit the library and look over our musical selections?\u00a0 Our materials don&#8217;t circulate, but you could make a photocopy of Wheatland&#8217;s own Whizz Bang Orchestra&#8217;s <em>Harmony Waltz<\/em>, as first herd in 1920, for only ten cents a page.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a small price to pay for a piece of our musical history!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Among our collections of genealogies and local histories, death records and newspaper abstracts hides a different kind of historical resource:\u00a0 Musical scores.
