In the summer of 1971, a group of musicians made a pilgrimage to Oakdale Cemetery in Davenport, Iowa.\u00a0 They planned to play a simple concert in homage to one of the pioneers of jazz, on\u00a0the fortieth\u00a0anniversary of his death.<\/p>\n

Almost two thousand people showed up at the gravesite to listen.<\/p>\n

The Bix Beiderbecke<\/a> Memorial Jazz Festival has only grown from there.<\/p>\n

This will come as no surprise to those of us who know Bix and have heard recordings of\u00a0 his compositions.\u00a0\u00a0 The man had a phenomenal musical memory and he used it to\u00a0weave the\u00a0unconventional patterns of\u00a0modern classical composers—Debussy, Ravel, Holst, and Stravinsky—with\u00a0his own\u00a0free syncopational style.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

And how was he as a\u00a0coronet player?\u00a0 At a\u00a0time when music was just starting to favor the soloist, Bix shone:*<\/em><\/p>\n

The celebration kicks off tomorrow, with the 23rd annual Bix Porch Party<\/a> at the Davenport Public Library on Main Street.\u00a0 We\u2019ll have hot dogs and hot music.\u00a0 Bring your lawn chairs and your dancing shoes.<\/p>\n
