{"id":1349,"date":"2010-02-12T15:40:34","date_gmt":"2010-02-12T20:40:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs2.davenportlibrary.com\/sc\/?p=1349"},"modified":"2010-02-12T15:40:55","modified_gmt":"2010-02-12T20:40:55","slug":"the-importance-of-primary-resources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/sc\/2010\/02\/12\/the-importance-of-primary-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"The Importance of Primary Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of our readers, former Davenporter Brendan Wolfe, wrote to share an interesting story about the only known newspaper interview with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qcmemory.org\/Default.aspx?PageId=233&amp;nt=207&amp;nt2=229\" target=\"_blank\">Bix Beiderbecke<\/a>, which was published in the <em>Davenport Democrat<\/em> on February 10, 1929.<\/p>\n<p>Bix Beiderbecke is always interesting, at least to us\u2014and certainly to Mr. Wolfe, who is writing a book on our favorite native jazz musician\u2014but the interview itself is intriguing.\u00a0 Not only because it\u2019s the only one, but because it may have been plagiarized.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Wolfe has written a blog post of his own about this, and as we wouldn\u2019t want to be accused of plagiarism ourselves, please read the original <a href=\"http:\/\/beiderbecke.typepad.com\/tba\/2010\/02\/bix-beiderbecke-the-interview.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 We\u2019ll wait.<\/p>\n<p>We would like to point out that this sort of thing is precisely why primary resources are so important, and why it is essential for researchers to trace information to its origin point, as Mr. Wolfe is doing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Things are not always what they seem, even in primary resources like early newspapers\u2014some reporters, hoping to attract readers, may have (ahem) \u00a0\u2018jazzed up\u2019 their articles a tad.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019d also like to thank Mr. Wolfe and invite all of our readers to share any fascinating historical stories of local interest\u2014supported by primary sources, of course!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of our readers, former Davenporter Brendan Wolfe, wrote to share an interesting story about the only known newspaper interview with Bix Beiderbecke, which was published in the Davenport Democrat on February 10, 1929.
