intrigued by how an individual could endure 27 years in prison and then\u00a0become South Africa&#8217;s\u00a0charismatic leader\u00a0during a critical phase in its history.\u00a0 Though\u00a0not a biography, <a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|2258067\" target=\"_blank\">this compact book,\u00a0subtitled <strong><em>Fifteen Lessons on Life, Love, and Courage<\/em><\/strong>,<\/a> gives us insights into the man&#8217;s character and allows us to easily absorb some of his life&#8217;s essentials truths.\u00a0 Here are a few examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Courage is Not the Absence of Fear<\/li>\n<li>Have a Core Principle<\/li>\n<li>See the Good in Others<\/li>\n<li>Know When to Say &#8220;No&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The author, Richard Stengel, editor of Time magazine, spent nearly three years with Mandela, eating with him, traveling with him and watching him interact with other dignitaries &#8212; and it shows.\u00a0\u00a0Stengel obviously has deep affection for his subject, and he\u00a0uses events in Mandela&#8217;s life\u00a0 to illustrate the lessons &#8212;\u00a0how as a child,\u00a0Mandela was raised by a tribal king as a companion for\u00a0his own son &#8212;\u00a0how\u00a0he became a freedom fighter and seldom saw his own family &#8212;\u00a0 and how he found new love and remarried at the age of eighty.<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/nelson-mandela.jpg?resize=95%2C71&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"95\" height=\"71\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I enjoyed this easy-to-read book and would recommend it not only to adults\u00a0eager to gain new leadership skills, but\u00a0also as an appropriate gift for those soon-to-be graduates on your list.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have long been fascinated by Nelson Mandela &#8212;
