While some say that baseball is no longer America&#8217;s favorite sport, it&#8217;s still an integral part of the American character. This week we&#8217;re going to celebrate a favorite combination\u00a0 &#8211; baseball at the movies. Lynn gets us started with a smart and funny film set in the minor leagues.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Bull-Durham.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6235\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Bull-Durham.jpg?resize=330%2C263&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"330\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My favorite baseball movie is <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|2053688\" target=\"_blank\">Bull Durham<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. Like the <a href=\"http:\/\/quadcities.riverbandits.milb.com\/index.jsp?sid=t565\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Quad City River Bandits<\/strong><\/a>, the Durham Bulls is a minor league team, with a charming baseball park.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the appeal of baseball games in Durham and Davenport, it seems to me, involves the picturesque\u00a0setting, the promotions, gimmicks, and\u00a0\u00a0tasty ballpark food.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know much about baseball, but a perfect summer evening to me, is walking from a downtown restaurant or piano bar to Modern Woodman Park. Taking in a game in the twilight, with the lights of\u00a0 Centennial Bridge&#8217;s span in the background can&#8217;t be beat.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|2053688\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Bull Durham<\/strong><\/em><\/a> stars,\u00a0\u00a0Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon and a very young Tim Robbins, were perfectly cast, as well as the rest of the ball players, coaches and managers.<\/p>\n<p>Costner plays a thinking person&#8217;s\u00a0athlete in\u00a0a baseball film that drops names like Edith Piaf, Susan Sontag\u00a0and Walt Whitman as readily as\u00a0Joe DiMaggio\u00a0and Ernie Banks. \u00a0Sarandon&#8217;s Annie Savoy\u00a0is not only an English teacher, but a expert in baseball history and strategy\u00a0in\u00a0a movie that can be enjoyed on many levels.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Baseball&#8217;s back which means summer can&#8217;t be far behind!
