{"id":5993,"date":"2010-03-22T06:00:46","date_gmt":"2010-03-22T12:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs2.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/?p=5993"},"modified":"2010-03-08T18:22:31","modified_gmt":"2010-03-09T00:22:31","slug":"frugal-librarian-23-vampire-appliances","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/frugal-librarian-23-vampire-appliances\/","title":{"rendered":"Frugal Librarian #23: Vampire Appliances"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If someon<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_BlU5V5BaMjY\/Sx_SZbZkxHI\/AAAAAAAAFqM\/LGxRORkOQoY\/s400\/VampirePowerSucks.jpg?resize=172%2C242\" alt=\"\" width=\"172\" height=\"242\" \/>e just handed you <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/the_conscious_consumer\/121\/energy-vampires-is-it-worth-it-to-unplug-your-electronics.html\" target=\"_blank\">a couple hundred bucks<\/a><\/strong> around Christmas time, you&#8217;d be cool with that, right?<\/p>\n<p>That, apparently, is what you will get if you can work into your routine a daily flip of a common power strip before you go out the door, effectively cutting the energy draw to devices that aren&#8217;t in use.\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenrightnow.com\/wls\/2009\/11\/20\/dont-let-energy-vampires-suck-away-your-holiday-cash\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vampire energy<\/a> <\/strong>(though obviously a lower amount than when the item is in full-tilt operation) still accumulates, some would say unnecessarily.\u00a0 That energy goes to keeping the clock illuminated, and having the device in a general state of almost-readiness for you to come use it.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re never going to come use it for a week, then there&#8217;s no sense in that, is there?<\/p>\n<p>According to the United States Department of Energy, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.energy.gov\/applianceselectronics.htm\" target=\"_blank\">75 percent<\/a><\/strong> of home electricity for appliances and electronics is consumed while they are turned off.<\/p>\n<p>Use that VCR very much?\u00a0 If it is plugged in, that&#8217;ll run you close to seven dollars this year.\u00a0 Plasma Televisions, Satellite A\/V receivers, are apparently pigs as well.<\/p>\n<p>A device that is getting a lot of press is the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thinkgeek.com\/gadgets\/travelpower\/7657\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kill-A-Watt<\/a><\/strong>, which tells you the draw of individual devices and predicts your bills.<\/p>\n<p>There also are <a href=\"http:\/\/planetgreen.discovery.com\/buying-guides\/buy-green-power-strips.html\" target=\"_blank\">smart power strips<\/a> which will sense when an appliances are in vampire mode and &#8220;stop the bleeding&#8221; so to speak.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If someone just handed you a couple hundred bucks around Christmas time, you&#8217;d be cool with that, right?
