<\/a>\"\"<\/a>How many of you hit the cineplex this holiday season?\u00a0 And enjoyed adaptations of books like Walter Kirn’s Up in the Air<\/a><\/em><\/strong>? Did you know that\u00a0Natalie didn’t\u00a0even exist in the book? The author explains in an NPR interview that\u00a0a “whole new character had to be introduced. A sort of sidekick had to be given to a lonely hero who spends most of the time in the novel observing and thinking about his world. But now we had to give him a chance to talk about his\u00a0world.”<\/p>\n

Another George Clooney vehicle., The<\/em><\/strong> Men Who Stare at Goats<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, is\u00a0based on a \u00a0book by Jon Ronson. This\u00a0is\u00a0 even more mind twisting. The viewer wonders how much of the film (which inevitably alters a book) is true\u00a0even though it’s\u00a0based on a non-fiction work.\u00a0The caption “More of this is true than you would believe” precedes the movie which sets up the question, “which particular parts <\/em>are true?<\/p>\n

What follows is the \u00a0depiction of the military’s\u00a0 experimentation with New Age psychic phenomena.\u00a0 Apparently, the Jeff Bridges character was based on a real officer (Lt. Col. Jim Channon) who led\u00a0a hippie army called the First Earth Batallion (or the New Earth Army in the movie) , according to Wired<\/em><\/strong> <\/a>magazine.<\/p>\n

And don’t forget Roald Dahl’s wonderful\u00a0Fantastic Mr. Fox<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, starring the voices of George Clooney and Meryl Streep. There is an insightful\u00a0article about the Wes Anderson\u00a0adaptation\u00a0\u00a0in November\/December’s \u00a0Film Comment<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n
