{"id":5220,"date":"2009-12-18T06:00:43","date_gmt":"2009-12-18T12:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs2.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/?p=5220"},"modified":"2009-12-08T10:13:41","modified_gmt":"2009-12-08T16:13:41","slug":"christmas-memory-by-truman-capote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/christmas-memory-by-truman-capote\/","title":{"rendered":"A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|2012253\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5227 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/christmasmemory.jpg?resize=200%2C280&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"christmasmemory\" width=\"200\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re like me and associate Truman Capote primarily with <a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|68597\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>In Cold Blood<\/em><\/strong>,<\/a> you might be pleasantly surprised to find something totally different in his &#8220;tiny gem of a short story,&#8221;<a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|368765\" target=\"_blank\"> <em><strong>A Christmas Memory<\/strong><\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 It fits the bill if you are looking for something meaningful yet humorous, and something nostalgic but not excessively sentimental.<\/p>\n<p>The story is largely autobiographical, a classic memoir of Capote&#8217;s childhood in rural Alabama in the early 1930&#8217;s.\u00a0 Until he was ten, Capote lived with distant relatives and this is his recollection (written in the present tense) of the time spent with a favorite cousin, Miss Sook Faulk, when he was about seven.\u00a0 Sook is a simple, older woman (perhaps mid-sixties) and is herself much like a child.\u00a0 Together they make fruitcakes &#8212; some for friends and neighbors,\u00a0 some to be shipped away.\u00a0 They count the money they have saved over the year (somewhere between $12.73 and $13.00) and decide they have enough to purchase all the ingredients, including a quart of &#8220;sinful&#8221; whiskey.\u00a0 Afterwards, they get a little tipsy on the leftover moonshine.\u00a0 They also chop down their own Christmas tree and end up making kites for each other as presents.\u00a0 The kleenex part comes at the end when Buddy is sent away to military school, never to see Sook again.<\/p>\n<p>The Davenport Library also has a<a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|2012253\" target=\"_blank\"> <strong>DVD version of this story<\/strong><\/a>, starring Patty Duke as Sook.\u00a0 Unchararcteristically, the movie actually has more character development than what is actually revealed in the sparse print version.\u00a0 However, the same message still comes through in both &#8212;
