There are those that say that the Obamas should have a few at the White House. You can even find plans on the internet for building a coop out of Ikea furniture.<\/p>\n<p>Orlean, author of the <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|1500549\" target=\"_blank\">Orchid Thief<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, turns her eye to small-time chicken raising\u00a0 in the September 28th \u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|270140\" target=\"_blank\">New Yorker<\/a><\/em>. She traces the history of keeping fowl \u00a0in America, how\u00a0they went out of favor in the fifties and\u00a0\u00a0how they were\u00a0gentrified by Martha Stewart&#8217;s gourmet chickens and pastel eggs. You may or may not know that Iowa is the home to the &#8220;largest rare-breed poultry hatchery in the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Orlean herself finds the perfect solution for her needs&#8230;just a few chickens (guaranteed to be hens) and a small plastic coop.
