Unsurprisingly for a Youth Services Librarian, I think good\u00a0picture books make the best gifts for all ages. They are pieces of art. They take up little room. They store well.\u00a0And they can usually be enjoyed in a matter of minutes, and thus, rarely result in causing the giftee any readers’ anxiety.\u00a0Here is a list of the books that I am most excited about giving this year:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The Skull<\/a><\/strong> <\/em>by Jan Klassen<\/p>\n

A beautiful retelling of a Tyrolean folktale about a girl who befriends a skull. This picture book\u00a0will especially\u00a0appeal\u00a0to tweens and teens due to the chapter book feel and ghoulish personality.\u00a0\u00a0The Author\/Illustrator’s note at the end is a must read!\u00a0I will actually be gifting this book to my 41 year old brother and giving other Jan Klassen books to my sister-in-law and nephew as a Klassen-themed family gift.\u00a0The Author\/Illustrator’s note at the end is a must read!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Big<\/a><\/strong><\/em> by Vashti Harrison<\/p>\n

If this book doesn’t win the Caldecott Medal this year, I will shatter. Both the\u00a0story and illustrations by Vashti Harrison\u00a0are STUNNING. Follow along as\u00a0a child discovers how\u00a0to love themselves while living in a world where words have the power to both hurt and heal. Have a tissue box\u00a0handy.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Moon Pops<\/a><\/strong><\/em> by\u00a0Baek Hee-na and translated by\u00a0Jieun Kiaer<\/p>\n

Moon Pops is a fresh, summery retelling of a Korean folktale\u00a0by internationally acclaimed Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award winner Heena Baek. During a hot evening, the moon begins to melt. Granny decides to collect the moon drops and make\u00a0popsicles\u00a0for her neighbors, but what will she do when the moon rabbits come by looking for their home? Every\u00a0time I read this book, I find something new to delight me in the glowing\u00a0illustrations.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Simon and the Better Bone<\/strong><\/em><\/a> by Corey R. Tabor<\/p>\n

This is my choice for best-dog-picture-book of the year! (Past winners include Hot Dog<\/a><\/em>, The Longest Letsgoboy<\/a><\/em>, Good Rosie<\/a><\/em>, Best Day Ever<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0Snook Alone<\/em><\/a>, and Please, Puppy, Please!<\/em><\/a>)<\/p>\n

Simon is happy to have found\u00a0a great bone, until he walks by a pond and sees another dog with a better bone. Simon is so playful and sweet, that you will want to just scoop him out of the book for a hug.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>There was a Party for Langston<\/a><\/strong><\/em> by Jason Reynolds and Jerome Pumphrey & Jarrett Pumphrey<\/p>\n

This is such a lovely, joyful picture\u00a0book about a real life party at the\u00a0Schomberg Library\u00a0that brought together some of history’s greatest authors to celebrate Langston Hughes. It feels exciting to\u00a0read\u00a0a picture book that flows and jumps and sings while also managing to introduce\u00a0young readers to so many important historical figures.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
