On a more personal note, I&#8217;ve had at least one of the songs from the album stuck in my head on and off since I first listened to the album &#8212; and you probably have too, if you&#8217;ve listened to it. So I decided to make lemonade from lemons and tell you how my English major brain has associated songs from <a href=\"https:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.7&amp;pos=1&amp;cn=1446183\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Midnights<\/strong><\/em><\/a> with different books. For sheer emotional power, and the strength of love and memory, this song has to be\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.7&amp;pos=1&amp;cn=1402846\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The King of Infinite Space <\/strong><\/a><\/em>by Lyndsay Faye<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>This book is an unforgettable Hamlet retelling with a powerful (and, spoilers, doomed) love at its core.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.7&amp;pos=3&amp;cn=1346745\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-37157\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/boyfriend-material.jpg?resize=113%2C170&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"113\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a>&#8220;It&#8217;s me \/ Hi! \/ I&#8217;m the problem, it&#8217;s me \/ At teatime \/ Everybody agrees \/ I&#8217;ll stare directly at the sun but never in the mirror \/ It must be exhausting always rooting for the anti-hero&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Antihero<\/strong> is the song I (and many others) can&#8217;t get out of our heads &#8212; it&#8217;s catchy, self-aware, self-destructive, and self-deprecating, with paranoid fear of losing relationships and (for me anyway) a hint of glamour. What it made me think of is my favorite romance book of all time, <a href=\"https:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.7&amp;pos=1&amp;cn=1346745\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Boyfriend Material <\/strong><\/a>by Alexis Hall (the sequel, <a href=\"https:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.7&amp;pos=8&amp;cn=1435781\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Husband Material<\/strong><\/a>, works as well) because of its self-deprecating humor, self-destructive tendencies, and an unforgettableness not unlike an earworm.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.7&amp;pos=3&amp;cn=1389290\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-45931\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/one-last-stop.jpg?resize=117%2C179&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"117\" height=\"179\" \/><\/a>&#8220;Are we falling like \/ Snow at the beach \/ Weird but it was beautiful \/ Flying in a dream \/ Stars by the pocketful \/ You wanting me \/ Tonight \/ Feels impossible \/ But it&#8217;s comin&#8217; down, no sound, it&#8217;s all around&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Snow on the Beach<\/strong> is all dreamlike, surreal vibes, with a star-crossed type romance running through it, which for me echoes the magical realism in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.7&amp;pos=3&amp;cn=1389290\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>One Last Stop <\/strong><\/a>by Casey McQuiston<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>Our lovable leads in that book find themselves in a similarly bizarre situation which they end up embracing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.7&amp;pos=1&amp;cn=1392083\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-41372\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/in-deeper-waters.jpg?resize=114%2C171&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"114\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/in-deeper-waters.jpg?resize=632%2C948&amp;ssl=1 632w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/in-deeper-waters.jpg?resize=1020%2C1530&amp;ssl=1 1020w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/in-deeper-waters.jpg?resize=768%2C1152&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/in-deeper-waters.jpg?resize=1024%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/in-deeper-waters.jpg?resize=1365%2C2048&amp;ssl=1 1365w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/in-deeper-waters.jpg?w=1400&amp;ssl=1 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 114px) 100vw, 114px\" \/><\/a>&#8220;What&#8217;s a girl gonna do? A diamond&#8217;s gotta shine \/ Best believe I&#8217;m still bejeweled when I walk in the room \/ I can still make the whole place shimmer&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ujudUb\">Now, I fully believe you&#8217;ll have a better pick for this one, but <strong>Bejeweled<\/strong>&#8216;s theme of claiming your power from a repressive relationship made me think of <a href=\"https:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.7&amp;pos=1&amp;cn=1392083\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>In Deeper Waters <\/strong><\/a>by FT Lukens, because among other things this book is about the main character embracing his power and identity and breaking free from fear and repression, and I just love to see it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.7&amp;pos=1&amp;cn=1279938\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-42715\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/elderly-lady-1.jpg?resize=115%2C173&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"115\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/elderly-lady-1.jpg?resize=632%2C948&amp;ssl=1 632w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/elderly-lady-1.jpg?resize=1020%2C1530&amp;ssl=1 1020w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/elderly-lady-1.jpg?resize=768%2C1152&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/elderly-lady-1.jpg?resize=1024%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/elderly-lady-1.jpg?resize=1365%2C2048&amp;ssl=1 1365w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/elderly-lady-1.jpg?w=1600&amp;ssl=1 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 115px) 100vw, 115px\" \/><\/a>&#8220;Sweet like honey, karma is a cat \/ Purring in my lap &#8217;cause it loves me \/ Flexing like a goddamn acrobat \/ Me and karma vibe like that&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Okay, another unconventional pick, but the smugness of <strong>Karma<\/strong>, waiting for the other shoe to drop, reminded me of <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.7&amp;pos=1&amp;cn=1279938\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">An Elderly Lady Is Up To No Good<\/a><\/strong><\/em> by Helene Tursten. Our elderly protagonist is similarly convinced of the justice of her actions &#8211; to very entertaining effect.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.7&amp;pos=1&amp;cn=1387216\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-41923\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/booksellers-boyfriend.jpg?resize=115%2C173&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"115\" height=\"173\" \/><\/a>&#8220;Everyone&#8217;s up to somethin&#8217; \/ I find myself runnin&#8217; home to your sweet nothings \/ Outside, they&#8217;re push and shovin&#8217; \/ You&#8217;re in the kitchen hummin&#8217; \/ All that you ever wanted from me was sweet nothin'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sweet Nothing<\/strong> is about finding a haven and home in someone who doesn&#8217;t burdern you with the expectations and pressure you receive everywhere else, which for me had to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.7&amp;pos=1&amp;cn=1387216\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>The Bookseller&#8217;s Boyfriend<\/em> <\/strong><\/a>by Heidi Cullinan<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>Also a cautionary tale about celebrity and social media, the romance in this book is all about an overworked, overwhelmed person finding rest in another&#8217;s company.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.7&amp;pos=1&amp;cn=1386431\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-44603\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/love-is-for-losers.jpg?resize=101%2C156&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"101\" height=\"156\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/love-is-for-losers.jpg?resize=632%2C977&amp;ssl=1 632w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/love-is-for-losers.jpg?resize=1020%2C1576&amp;ssl=1 1020w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/love-is-for-losers.jpg?resize=768%2C1187&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/love-is-for-losers.jpg?resize=994%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 994w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/love-is-for-losers.jpg?resize=1325%2C2048&amp;ssl=1 1325w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/love-is-for-losers.jpg?w=1650&amp;ssl=1 1650w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 101px) 100vw, 101px\" \/><\/a>&#8220;So I told you none of it was accidental \/ And the first night that you saw me, nothing was gonna stop me \/ I laid the groundwork and then saw a wide smirk \/ On your face, you knew the entire time \/ You knew that I&#8217;m a mastermind \/ And now you&#8217;re mine&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ujudUb WRZytc\">Not exactly the same vibe, but <strong>Mastermind<\/strong>&#8216;s ending, when the singer realizes that though they thought they were being subtle, they were actually transparent to their partner, reminded me of <a href=\"https:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.7&amp;pos=1&amp;cn=1386431\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Love is for Losers<\/em> <\/strong><\/a>by Wibke Brueggemann<strong>, <\/strong>in which another scheming narrator discovers the joy of being known and accepted for all your faults.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>Let us know, do you agree with my associations?
