\"\"<\/a>Readers! Welcome to the August edition of the Online Reading Challenge. This month we cover one of our favorite topics – books and how reading can create connection and community.<\/p>\n

The Main Title this month is The Library Book<\/strong><\/em><\/a> by Susan Orleans. I loved this book – it’s so well written, covers a wide range of topics and there’s lots of action. Of course, it was especially interesting to me because of the library connection, but there’s lots packed in here, including fire science, history and crime. A dazzling love letter to a beloved institution\u2014and an investigation into one of its greatest mysteries. On\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0morning of April 28, 1986, a fire alarm sounded in\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0Los Angeles Public\u00a0Library<\/span>. As\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0moments passed,\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0patrons and staff who had been cleared out of\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0building realized this was not\u00a0the<\/span> usual fire alarm. The<\/span>\u00a0fire was disastrous: it reached 2000 degrees and burned for more than seven hours. By\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0time it was extinguished, it had consumed four hundred thousand\u00a0books<\/span>\u00a0and damaged seven hundred thousand more. Investigators descended on\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0scene, but more than thirty years later,\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0mystery remains: Did someone purposefully set fire to\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0library<\/span>\u2014and if so, who?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
