{"id":359,"date":"2008-06-05T06:00:13","date_gmt":"2008-06-05T12:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs2.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/?p=359"},"modified":"2008-06-04T09:26:43","modified_gmt":"2008-06-04T15:26:43","slug":"the-story-of-edgar-sawtelle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/the-story-of-edgar-sawtelle\/","title":{"rendered":"The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0.5in;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/dog-book3.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-363 alignleft\" style=\"float: left;\" title=\"dog-book3\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/dog-book3.jpg?resize=240%2C240&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/dog-book3.jpg?w=240&amp;ssl=1 240w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/dog-book3.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"small;\"><span style=\"Calibri;\">One of the fun things about being a librarian is that sometimes publishers will send us \u201cadvance reader\u2019s editions.\u201d<span style=\"yes;\"> <\/span>These are books that have not yet been published and often times they have not even been reviewed.<span style=\"yes;\"> <\/span>Usually when we read a book, we\u2019ve already read upteen reviews for it or at least heard about it from Oprah. <span style=\"yes;\"> <\/span>So it\u2019s very refreshing to pick up a book without having any preconceived ideas about it.<span style=\"yes;\"> <\/span>Well, okay, in this case Stephen King had written a blurb recommending it, so I did have some idea.<span style=\"yes;\"> <\/span>And no, it\u2019s not a horror book.<span style=\"yes;\"> <\/span>It\u2019s called <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/216.125.140.44\/uhtbin\/cgisirsi\/x\/0\/0\/57\/5?searchdata1=ocn179805747&amp;user_id=davmainweb\" target=\"_blank\">The Story of Edgar Sawtelle<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, by David Wroblewski.<span style=\"yes;\"> <\/span><span style=\"yes;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0.5in;\"><span style=\"Calibri;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0.5in;\"><span style=\"small;\"><span style=\"Calibri;\">Edgar, born mute and communicating through sign, is a boy growing up on a farm in Wisconsin, a farm on which they raise and train the special (and fictional) Sawtelle breed of dogs.<span style=\"yes;\"> <\/span>Life is pretty peaceful for the family until his uncle Claude returns and decides to stay.<span style=\"yes;\"> <\/span>Later, when Edgar\u2019s father dies unexpectedly, Edgar tries to prove that Claude had something to do with it.<span style=\"yes;\"> <\/span>Unfortunately, his plan backfires, and Edgar is forced to flee into the nearby Chequamegon wilderness.<span style=\"yes;\"> <\/span>Struggling to survive and provide for the three yearling dogs that accompany him, Edgar grows up quickly.<span style=\"yes;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0.5in;\"><span style=\"Calibri;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0.5in;\"><span style=\"small;\"><span style=\"Calibri;\">The ending may not be what you hope for or expect, but it is precisely because of it that I predict this book will become excellent fodder for future book discussion groups.<span style=\"yes;\"> <\/span>Look for it when it comes out!<span style=\"yes;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the fun things about being a librarian is that sometimes publishers will send us \u201cadvance reader\u2019s editions.\u201d These are books that have not yet been published and often times they have not even been reviewed.
