{"id":28422,"date":"2016-06-21T06:00:53","date_gmt":"2016-06-21T11:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs2.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/?p=28422"},"modified":"2016-06-08T15:02:35","modified_gmt":"2016-06-08T20:02:35","slug":"the-dementia-caregiver-by-marc-agronin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/the-dementia-caregiver-by-marc-agronin\/","title":{"rendered":"The Dementia Caregiver by Marc Agronin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.3&amp;cn=1159836\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-28468\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-28468\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/dementia-caregiver2.jpg?resize=266%2C400&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"dementia caregiver2\" width=\"266\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>No one likes to hear the news that a loved one has been diagnosed with Alzheimer&#8217;s disease or some other form of dementia. \u00a0Suddenly you are the caregiver of someone with a neurocognitive\u00a0disorder and you have no idea what that means. \u00a0What is dementia? \u00a0What do you need to do in order to take care of your loved one? \u00a0If you are in this situation and you have questions that need answers, then you should check out <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.3&amp;cn=1159836\" target=\"_blank\">The Dementia Caregiver<\/a><\/strong><\/em> by Marc Argonin.<\/p>\n<p>Even though the title of this books states that it is a guide, I would call it a manual. \u00a0This well researched book, (with well documented notations in the back of the book) explains what you need to know about neurocognitive disorders. \u00a0There are chapters that describe the different disorders on the spectrum, such as Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia and dementia with lewy bodies. \u00a0Other chapters describe caregiving during mild stages, moderate stages and advanced stages. \u00a0The author also addresses known side effects such as depression, anxiety, apathy, sleep problems, agitation and psychosis.<\/p>\n<p>Even though there are a lot of chapters devoted to learning about dementia, there is also a lot of information for the caregiver. \u00a0This book details information on long-term care and legal issues. \u00a0There is a wealth of information on resources such as the Alzheimer&#8217;s Association, Medicare, Geriatric Care and Elder Law. \u00a0And most importantly, there is information for caregivers on how to take care of themselves! \u00a0Caregivers need to be healthy too!<\/p>\n<p>As stated in the book: &#8220;Becoming a caregiver for someone with Alzheimer&#8217;s disease or another neurocognitive disorder can be an unexpected, undesirable, underappreciated-and yet noble-role. \u00a0It is heart-breaking to watch someone lose the very cognitive capacities that once helped to define them as a person. \u00a0But because of the nature of these disorders, the only to become an effective caregiver and cope with the role&#8217;s many daily challenges is to become well-informed about the disease.
