\"\"<\/a>Everyone has a story to tell. I enjoy reading biographies in general, but I find the life stories of musicians especially\u00a0captivating. The wild and crazy lifestyles of some musicians (especially rock n’ rollers) can make very interesting stories.\u00a0You’ve probably heard the expression\u00a0about truth sometimes being stranger than\u00a0fiction.\u00a0Nowhere can\u00a0this idiom be more true than\u00a0between the pages of a book about a musician.<\/p>\n

Reading autobiographies (books written by the subject) and biographies (books about people\u00a0written by someone else)\u00a0can be illuminating.\u00a0I encourage you to read both kinds and see if you have a preference. You might even take a walk on the wild side and read about\u00a0musicians whose\u00a0genre of music you don’t typically enjoy. Who knows? It might motivate you to\u00a0expand your repertoire and start listening to a new genre of music once in a while.\u00a0I find that the better I understand the motivations and perspectives of the people behind the music, the more I tend to enjoy the music.<\/p>\n

One such autobiography I especially enjoyed is Scar Tissue<\/a><\/strong><\/em> by Anthony Kiedis. You may not have known that this\u00a0lead singer of The Red Hot Chili Peppers started his career as an actor before he was a musician. He landed his\u00a0first major\u00a0role in the\u00a01978 film F.I.S.T.<\/a> as Sylvester Stallone’s son. He went on to enjoy roles ranging from television (ABC Afterschool Specials, The Simpsons) to movies (Jokes My Folks Never Told Me,\u00a0Point Break, The Chase).\u00a0He has also been a writer and producer. His\u00a0literary and musical\u00a0influences include Charles Bukowski, Neil Young, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and Prince.<\/p>\n

Kiedis\u00a0grew up\u00a0in Grand Rapids, MI where he lived with his mother, stepfather and two stepsisters. He spent\u00a0two weeks\u00a0every summer visiting his father in Hollywood.\u00a0At\u00a0twelve years old\u00a0he moved\u00a0in with his father and began\u00a0a struggle with addiction to drugs. While attending Fairfax High School in L.A. he met Michael Peter Balzary (better known today under the stage name Flea). Despite a rocky start these two became\u00a0close friends who enjoyed making mischief at every opportunity,\u00a0including jumping off rooftops. Once, Kiedis attempted jumping\u00a0into a pool from five stories up. He missed. Fortunately, he lived to tell his story.
