Judy Blume<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Judy Blume would know &#8212; she has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/bbooks\/frequentlychallengedbooks\/challengedauthors\" target=\"_blank\">5 of the top 100 most challenged books from 1990-1999<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; but when you peruse the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.library.illinois.edu\/sshel\/s-coll\/findbks\/addlbibs\/challengedbooks\/index.htm\">lists of the most frequently challenged books<\/a>, it is hard not to agree. \u00a0Below, I&#8217;ve highlighted the three challenged books that surprised me the most.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.3&amp;cn=479005\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-25968\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/strega-nona.jpg?resize=231%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"strega nona\" width=\"231\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/strega-nona.jpg?resize=231%2C300&amp;ssl=1 231w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/strega-nona.jpg?w=308&amp;ssl=1 308w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.3&amp;cn=479005\" target=\"_blank\">Strega Nona<\/a><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0by Tomie dePaola<br \/>\nTomie dePaola&#8217;s classic picture book is often cited as one of the best picture books of all time\u00a0&#8212; it was #34 on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.slj.com\/afuse8production\/2012\/06\/01\/top-100-picture-books-34-strega-nona-by-tomie-de-paola\/#_\">SLJ&#8217;s Top 100 Picture Books<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; so it might come as a surprise that it has been challenged. \u00a0The story of a magical old woman (&#8220;grandma witch&#8221;) who tells her assistant &#8212; Big Anthony &#8212; not to touch her magical pot of pasta. \u00a0Big Anthony ignores her and Strega Nona must save the day before the town is overrun in pasta.<br \/>\n<strong>Why was it challenged or banned?<\/strong> Witchcraft, of course.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/searchresults.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.3&amp;type=Keyword&amp;term=where%27s%20waldo%20handford&amp;by=KW&amp;sort=RELEVANCE&amp;limit=TOM=*&amp;query=&amp;page=0&amp;searchid=11\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-25970\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/wheres-waldo.jpg?resize=240%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"wheres waldo\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/wheres-waldo.jpg?resize=240%2C300&amp;ssl=1 240w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/wheres-waldo.jpg?w=320&amp;ssl=1 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/searchresults.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.3&amp;type=Keyword&amp;term=where%27s%20waldo%20handford&amp;by=KW&amp;sort=RELEVANCE&amp;limit=TOM=*&amp;query=&amp;page=0&amp;searchid=4\" target=\"_blank\">Where&#8217;s Waldo<\/a><\/strong><\/em> by Martin Hanford<br \/>\nI loved <em><strong>Where&#8217;s Waldo<\/strong><\/em> books as a kid. \u00a0My mom would bring a stack of them with us on long car rides and they would entertain my brother and me for hours. \u00a0Waldo\u00a0books\u00a0are\u00a0a challenge of concentration and a fantastic way to get kids to pick up on pattern and color. \u00a0I looked at these books\u00a0for hours and before reading about why the book was challenged and banned, I would have never guessed.<br \/>\n<strong>Why was it challenged or banned?\u00a0<\/strong>Apparently in searching for Waldo, some people have been shocked to find topless sunbathers, gay couples, and people holding up the rocker hand sign (or as they called it &#8220;Hail Satan&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.3&amp;cn=709037\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-25969\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/charlottes-web.jpg?resize=201%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"charlotte's web\" width=\"201\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/charlottes-web.jpg?resize=201%2C300&amp;ssl=1 201w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/charlottes-web.jpg?w=268&amp;ssl=1 268w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.3&amp;cn=709037\" target=\"_blank\">Charlotte&#8217;s Web<\/a><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0by E.B.
