Here&#8217;s an excerpt:<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\"><span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: 'Georgia','serif';\">&#8220;Have you ever gotten in trouble for reading a book?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\"><span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: 'Georgia','serif';\">Gosh, I&#8217;m not sure.\u00a0Last year I bought an\u00a0Eliot Weinberger essay\u00a0collection to my son&#8217;s lacrosse\u00a0practice and took a wayward ball to the shin\u00a0because I was sitting too close\u00a0to the field.\u00a0I did read &#8220;The Sheltering Sky&#8221; when\u00a0I was 11 or 12 years old. (&#8220;Mom, what&#8217;s hashish?)\u00a0But I don&#8217;t think I\u00a0got in trouble for it.\u00a0\u00a0On the contrary,\u00a0I was incredibly blessed\u00a0because neither my mother nor\u00a0the local librarians ever said &#8216;This is outside\u00a0your age range, Tony.\u00a0\u00a0You can&#8217;t handle this.&#8217;\u00a0\u00a0They trusted us\u00a0to make our own paths\u00a0through books\u00a0\u00a0and that&#8217;s\u00a0very, very empowering.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">From <em>Anthony Doerr: By the Book, New York Times, <\/em>p. 8,\u00a0July 5, 2015.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">Or sometimes, it hits a little close to home. To quote Judd Apatow:<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">&#8220;My buying-to-actually reading ratio is 387 to 1. &#8230;I have actually convinced myself that buying books is the same as reading&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">This is in\u00a0answer to the question: &#8220;Whom do you consider the best writers &#8211; novelists, essayists, critics, journalists, poets &#8211; working today?,&#8221; he says, &#8220;I am the last person you should ask because I don&#8217;t read that much.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">From <em>Judd Apatow: By the Book, New York Times<\/em>, p. 7, June 14, 2015<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">I\u00a0intend to browse through back issues at the Main library, and\u00a0look for\u00a0Carl Hiaasen, Neil Gaiman, Anne Lamott, Alain de Botton, Marilynne Robinson, and Michael Connelly, among others (you can also browse the archives online to see a list of featured authors). \u00a0These are folks that I&#8217;m guessing are going to be both witty and not so very full of themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">So, how would you answer the <em>By the Book<\/em>\u00a0questionnaire?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More often than not, the Sunday New York Times Book Review\u00a0contains a passage that you wish you&#8217;d written, or that you&#8217;d like to save somewhere to inspire yourself about the importance of books, reading and libraries.
