During that time, Armstrong and Aldrin took pictures, did experiments and collected 46 pounds of Moon rocks. \u00a0They left behind an American Flag, a patch honoring the crew of Apollo 1 and a plaque. \u00a0The plaque reads, &#8220;Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon. July 1969. We came in peace for all mankind&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>NASA had been challenged by President Kennedy to put a man on the Moon before the decade was out and NASA met that challenge.
