{"id":20377,"date":"2013-07-29T08:00:22","date_gmt":"2013-07-29T13:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs2.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/?p=20377"},"modified":"2013-07-05T15:56:48","modified_gmt":"2013-07-05T20:56:48","slug":"the-homeland-directive-by-robert-venditti","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/the-homeland-directive-by-robert-venditti\/","title":{"rendered":"The Homeland Directive by Robert Venditti"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/homelanddirective.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-20380\" alt=\"homelanddirective\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/homelanddirective.jpg?resize=197%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/homelanddirective.jpg?resize=197%2C300&amp;ssl=1 197w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/homelanddirective.jpg?w=263&amp;ssl=1 263w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/><\/a>I wouldn&#8217;t call myself a paranoid person. \u00a0I do sometimes run to get into bed and pull up the covers as quickly as possible after watching a <\/span><em style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/searchresults.aspx?ctx=16.1033.0.0.3&amp;type=Default&amp;term=law%20and%20order%20special%20victims%20unit&amp;by=KW&amp;sort=RELEVANCE&amp;limit=TOM=*&amp;query=&amp;page=0\" target=\"_blank\">Law and Order: SVU<\/a><\/strong><\/em><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> marathon. \u00a0After reading George Orwell&#8217;s<\/span><em style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/searchresults.aspx?ctx=16.1033.0.0.3&amp;type=Default&amp;term=1984&amp;by=KW&amp;sort=RELEVANCE&amp;limit=TOM=*&amp;query=&amp;page=0\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>1984<\/strong><\/a><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">, I did start regarding every tv or computer screen with a small fear that it was a potential 2-way telescreen. \u00a0Despite this, I am typically a level-headed librarian that loves to drop the phrase &#8220;peer-reviewed research&#8221; into regular\u00a0<\/span>conversations<span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">But Robert Venditti&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/searchresults.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.3&amp;type=Keyword&amp;term=homeland%20directive&amp;by=KW&amp;sort=RELEVANCE&amp;limit=TOM=*&amp;query=&amp;page=0\" target=\"_blank\">The Homeland Directive<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">brought out the conspiracy theorist in me. \u00a0When I finished reading the graphic novel, I wasn&#8217;t convinced that the federal government was spreading an infectious disease in hopes of scaring the population into submission and setting up the head of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for the murder of her research partner. \u00a0But when I was in the middle of the novel, it didn&#8217;t seem entirely far fetched. \u00a0Venditti was able to take me out of my own perception of the world while I read this graphic novel, and left me thinking far after I finished reading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Pairing with brilliant illustrator, Mike Huddleston, Venditti wrote a piece that feels outrageous and real at the same time. \u00a0The illustrations are complicated and portray mood more than action, and the style changes with the setting and cast of characters. \u00a0All together, this is a stylistic, powerful graphic novel with a well edited story and smart pacing. \u00a0Everything that needs to be in the story is there, with no extras. \u00a0I would recommend this book for fans of Brian K.
