Really. A traveling companion picked up this t-shirt in a downtown art gallery, of all places:<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.prestoimages.net\/store30\/rd3613\/3613_pd1363420_th1.jpg?w=1050\" alt=\"http:\/\/www.prestoimages.net\/store30\/rd3613\/3613_pd1363420_th1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With a metro area some 200,000 strong, Fargo is home to a state university, quite a lot of railroad tracks, a surprisingly bumpin&#8217; downtown area, and three library locations. For some perspective, the Fargo Radisson is the tallest building in town at 18 stories (and no, there&#8217;s no observation deck. The top floor is leased to a law firm and they&#8217;re <em>very<\/em> uptight about hotel guests exploring their floor &#8211; can&#8217;t imagine why). Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, whose unique style gives this movie an unforgettable tone.<\/li>\n<li>Trains roll through Fargo at terrifying speeds. Honestly &#8211; they move about twice as fast through downtown Fargo as they do through downtown Davenport. The corresponding noise and whooshing wind is rather alarming, especially if you&#8217;re on foot waiting for it to pass. <a href=\"http:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/searchresults.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.1&amp;type=Keyword&amp;term=strangers%20on%20a%20train&amp;by=TI&amp;sort=RELEVANCE&amp;limit=TOM=dvd&amp;query=&amp;page=0\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Strangers on a Train<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (the Hitchcock classic about a murder pact gone awry) and <a href=\"http:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/searchresults.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.1&amp;type=Keyword&amp;term=murder%20on%20the%20orient%20express&amp;by=TI&amp;sort=RELEVANCE&amp;limit=TOM=*&amp;query=&amp;page=0\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Murder on the Orient Express<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (the unforgettable Agatha Christie mystery) also involve trains, and plenty of murder &#8211; a distinctly Fargo-esque combination, based on my extremely limited and highly biased research.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/searchresults.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.1&amp;type=Keyword&amp;term=erdrich,%20louise&amp;by=AU&amp;sort=RELEVANCE&amp;limit=TOM=bks&amp;query=&amp;page=0\" target=\"_blank\">Louise Erdrich<\/a> was prominently featured both at <a href=\"http:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/searchresults.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.1&amp;type=Keyword&amp;term=love%20medicine:%20a%20novel&amp;by=TI&amp;sort=RELEVANCE&amp;limit=TOM=bks&amp;query=&amp;page=0\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-17124\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/lovemedicine.jpg?resize=198%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/lovemedicine.jpg?resize=198%2C300&amp;ssl=1 198w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/lovemedicine.jpg?w=315&amp;ssl=1 315w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/a>the Fargo Public Library and at the hip downtown Fargo bookstore. Her stories about Native Americans past and present are rich with descriptions of the Great Plains and its people; <a href=\"http:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/searchresults.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.1&amp;type=Keyword&amp;term=love%20medicine:%20a%20novel&amp;by=TI&amp;sort=RELEVANCE&amp;limit=TOM=bks&amp;query=&amp;page=0\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Love Medicine<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, her first novel, is set in North Dakota and is excellent. Ditto her second novel, <a href=\"http:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/searchresults.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.1&amp;type=Keyword&amp;term=the%20beet%20queen&amp;by=TI&amp;sort=RELEVANCE&amp;limit=TOM=bks&amp;query=&amp;page=0\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>The Beet Queen<\/strong><\/em><\/a>. (side note: I also highly recommend <a href=\"http:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/searchresults.aspx?ctx=14.1033.0.0.1&amp;type=Keyword&amp;term=the%20painted%20drum&amp;by=TI&amp;sort=RELEVANCE&amp;limit=TOM=bks&amp;query=&amp;page=0\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>The Painted Drum<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, although it really has nothing to do with Fargo and probably deserves its own post).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently visited Fargo, North Dakota.
