\"\"<\/a>The popularity of Suzanne Collin’s Hunger Games<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, got me thinking about apocalyptic\u00a0books I’ve read. Alas, Babylon<\/strong><\/em><\/a>by Pat Frank was on school reading lists- years ago. Originally published in 1959, the novel is about the survival of a community in Florida after the United States\u00a0has been\u00a0hit by\u00a0 nuclear missiles.<\/p>\n

What is satisfying about this books is how the extended family of\u00a0Randy Bragg\u00a0gets back to nature in order\u00a0to survive – using local plants, fruits and trees to eat and to re-build. And eventually they thrive and learn to appreciate their new-found lifestyle.<\/p>\n

The story has alot in common with that of\u00a0 <\/strong>Swiss<\/strong><\/em> Family Robinson<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. Like the Pat Frank book, the characters respond to adversity with ingenuity. Both books\u00a0take place\u00a0in tropical settings, which give the families a definite advantage. They don’t have to cope with cold weather and are surrounded\u00a0by abundant sources of food and fuel.<\/p>\n

Shipwrecks, nuclear war and other disasters\u00a0have always been\u00a0 catalysts to the imaginations of novelists. How do you think you would fare in those circumstances?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
