Originally published in 1959, the novel is about the survival of a community in Florida after the United States\u00a0has been\u00a0hit by\u00a0 nuclear missiles.<\/p>\n<p>What is satisfying about this books is how the extended family of\u00a0Randy Bragg\u00a0gets back to nature in order\u00a0to survive &#8211; using local plants, fruits and trees to eat and to re-build. And eventually they thrive and learn to appreciate their new-found lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>The story has alot in common with that of\u00a0<em><strong> <\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/rivershare.polarislibrary.com\/search\/searchresults.aspx?ctx=16.1033.0.0.1&amp;type=Keyword&amp;term=the%20swiss%20family%20robinson&amp;by=KW&amp;sort=RELEVANCE&amp;limit=TOM=dvd&amp;query=&amp;page=0#__pos3\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Swiss<\/strong><\/em> Family Robinson<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. Like the Pat Frank book, the characters respond to adversity with ingenuity. Both books\u00a0take place\u00a0in tropical settings, which give the families a definite advantage. They don&#8217;t have to cope with cold weather and are surrounded\u00a0by abundant sources of food and fuel.<\/p>\n<p>Shipwrecks, nuclear war and other disasters\u00a0have always been\u00a0 catalysts to the imaginations of novelists.
