It&#8217;s a disease most of us would rather not think about, much less read about.  Still, I&#8217;ve just finished reading a lovely book entitled <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/216.125.140.44\/uhtbin\/cgisirsi\/x\/0\/0\/57\/5?searchdata1=ocn181603307&amp;user_id=davmainweb\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Measure of the Heart: A Father&#8217;s Alzheimer&#8217;s, A Daughter&#8217;s Return<\/em><\/a> <\/strong>by Mary Ellen Geist.  Perhaps I was drawn to it because my own mother had Alzheimer&#8217;s.  Perhaps the black and white photo on the cover brought back memories of me walking with my mom.  Still, I approached it with a degree of ambivalence.  Did I really want to read this and risk drudging up a very sad time?   Well, I&#8217;m glad I did.  It was not at all depressing, but rather a touching and tender tribute, reinforcing my own experience that caring for our loved ones can be both and a blessing and a privilege.<\/p>\n<p>As I watch the leaves fall to the ground,<a href=\"http:\/\/216.125.140.44\/uhtbin\/cgisirsi\/x\/0\/0\/57\/5?searchdata1=ocn144763320&amp;user_id=davmainweb\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"158\" height=\"206\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1475 alignright\" title=\"voices-of-alzheimers\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/voices-of-alzheimers.jpg?resize=158%2C206&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a> it seems appropriate that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alz.org\/join_the_cause_14980.asp\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>November is National Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/strong> <strong>Disease Month<\/strong><\/a>.  If you&#8217;re interested in learning more about this affliction,  I would recommend <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/216.125.140.44\/uhtbin\/cgisirsi\/x\/0\/0\/57\/5?searchdata1=ocm65201324&amp;user_id=davmainweb\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The 36-Hour Day<\/em><\/a> <\/strong>by Nancy Mace and Peter Rabins, currently in its 4th edition.  This is a virtual bible for caregivers, and one I relied upon heavily.<\/p>\n<p>Another interesting read is <a href=\"http:\/\/216.125.140.44\/uhtbin\/cgisirsi\/x\/0\/0\/57\/5?searchdata1=ocn144763320&amp;user_id=davmainweb\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Voices of Alzheimer&#8217;s, The Healing Companion: Stories for Courage, Comfort and Strength<\/em><\/strong>,<\/a> a compilation of personal anecdotes and experiences, edited by The Healing Project.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alzheimer&#8217;s.
