{"id":1243,"date":"2008-10-28T06:00:25","date_gmt":"2008-10-28T12:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs2.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/?p=1243"},"modified":"2008-10-07T15:24:51","modified_gmt":"2008-10-07T21:24:51","slug":"witches-goblins-and-ghosts-oh-no","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/witches-goblins-and-ghosts-oh-no\/","title":{"rendered":"Witches, Goblins and Ghosts, Oh No!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Halloween is fast approaching, and of course this makes an ideal time to read some of those gory horror books.<span> <\/span>However, if you\u2019re not a big <span style=\"Algerian;\">Horror<\/span> fan (like me) you might enjoy these titles of a kinder, gentler nature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/brida1.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1249 alignleft\" title=\"brida1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/brida1.jpg?resize=161%2C245&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"161\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/brida1.jpg?w=424&amp;ssl=1 424w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/brida1.jpg?resize=196%2C300&amp;ssl=1 196w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 161px) 100vw, 161px\" \/><\/a><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/216.125.140.44\/uhtbin\/cgisirsi\/x\/0\/0\/57\/5?searchdata1=ocn190876987&amp;user_id=davmainweb\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Brida<\/em><\/a><\/strong> by Paul Coelho<\/p>\n<p>Well, I should\u2019ve known better.<span> <\/span>This popular Spanish author, Paul Coelho, has written other books about witches (<em>The Witch of Portobello<\/em> most recently) but from the title and the cover art, I guess I was expecting something different.<span> <\/span>And, really, it\u2019s more of a light romance.<span> <\/span>The main character, Brida, is a 21 year old Irish lass who wants to become a witch, so the story line revolves around her search and\/or efforts to become one.<span> <\/span>There\u2019s some pulling together of Christian and spiritualist themes which I personally didn\u2019t understand, but <span> <\/span>then, I kept reminding myself that it was a work of fiction.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/216.125.140.44\/uhtbin\/cgisirsi\/x\/0\/0\/57\/5?searchdata1=ocn156832395&amp;user_id=davmainweb\" target=\"_blank\">Mozart&#8217;s Ghost<\/a><\/strong><\/em> by Julia Cameron<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/s-ghost1.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"183\" height=\"280\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1250 alignright\" title=\"s-ghost1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/s-ghost1.jpg?resize=183%2C280&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As for ghosts, I\u2019m just finishing up <em>Mozart\u2019s Ghost<\/em>, by Julia Cameron.<span> <\/span>This, also, has turned out to be a light romantic story.<span> <\/span>Here, the main character is Anna, a 30-something \u201cmedium \u2013medium\u201d as she calls herself.<span> <\/span>Anna moved to New York a few years ago in part to escape the conservative Midwestern<span> <\/span>views present in her home town of Ann Arbor, Michigan.<span> <\/span>In order to pay the rent, she teaches school by day, but her main focus is to establish herself as a medium, someone who helps others contact recently departed loved ones (i.e. \u2013 ghosts).<span> <\/span>When a struggling young pianist moves into her apartment building, she finds his constant practicing very distracting.<span> <\/span>Even more disturbing, though, are the frequent intrusions she gets from Mozart\u2019s ghost, who is anxious for Anna to \u201chelp\u201d the pianist correctly interpret his complex musical compositions. <span> <\/span>I\u2019m not going to spoil the ending for you.<span> <\/span>Besides, as I said, I haven\u2019t finished it \u2013 yet!<span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Unfortunately, I really haven\u2019t read any goblin stories recently \u2013 but if you\u2019d like to recommend one, I\u2019d certainly give it a shot.<span> <\/span>Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy these \u201cHalloween Light\u201d suggestions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Halloween is fast approaching, and of course this makes an ideal time to read some of those gory horror books.
