{"id":12028,"date":"2011-06-17T06:00:02","date_gmt":"2011-06-17T12:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs2.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/?p=12028"},"modified":"2011-06-11T08:45:56","modified_gmt":"2011-06-11T14:45:56","slug":"my-father-said-marry-a-wally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/my-father-said-marry-a-wally\/","title":{"rendered":"My Father said &#8220;Marry a Wally&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|1009201\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-12120\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/leaveittobeaver.jpg?resize=214%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>During my childhood, my father worked hard to educate my brother and me on all the classic family sitcoms of the 1960&#8217;s: <a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|946820\"><strong><em>The Andy Griffith Show<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|2059025\"><strong><em>F Troop<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|2225632\"><strong><em>Mr. Ed<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|2122760\"><strong><em>My Three Sons<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, etc, but all of his references of the Cleaver family fell on ignorant ears until a fateful Father&#8217;s Day weekend when TVLand finally introduced reruns of <a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|1009201\"><strong><em>Leave it to Beaver<\/em><\/strong><\/a> by airing a whole-weekend-long marathon. I was hooked after the first episode and even popped in a VHS tape to record as many episodes as I could (just in case TVLand decided to be cruel and revoke my Cleaver family privileges after the weekend marathon wrapped up. Luckily they did not, and I have had about 15 blissful years of <a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|1009201\"><strong><em>Leave it to Beaver<\/em><\/strong><\/a> reruns.)<\/p>\n<p>So I finally understood why my Dad always told me that he wanted me to marry &#8220;a Wally,&#8221; and I quite agreed for a long time (Tony Dow was super cute). Until I met my husband and realized that hanging out with &#8220;a Theodore&#8221; was a little bit more fun. I think my Dad is just content that I didn&#8217;t fall in love with &#8220;a Lumpy&#8221; or &#8220;an Eddie Haskall&#8221; (who, by the way, was the inspiration for the name of my brother&#8217;s high school punk band).<\/p>\n<p>My father will be out of town this Father&#8217;s Day, but I&#8217;m going to have to rent some <a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|2324078\"><strong><em>Leave it to Beaver<\/em><\/strong><\/a> DVDs (from the library, of course!) to celebrate in spirit.
