{"id":11362,"date":"2011-04-11T06:00:38","date_gmt":"2011-04-11T12:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs2.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/?p=11362"},"modified":"2011-04-07T09:18:53","modified_gmt":"2011-04-07T15:18:53","slug":"national-library-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/national-library-week\/","title":{"rendered":"National Library Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>April 10-16 is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/ala\/conferencesevents\/celebrationweeks\/natlibraryweek\/index.cfm\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>National Library Week<\/strong><\/a>!\u00a0 What a perfect time to check out some materials featuring libraries and\/or librarians.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\" \t http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|875949\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11378 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/rule-of-four.jpg?resize=125%2C190&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"125\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here are a few of my favorites, and even though technically the main characters aren&#8217;t librarians, they definitely do spend\u00a0a\u00a0lot of time <em>in <\/em>libraries.\u00a0 First off is <em><strong><a href=\" \t http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|875949\" target=\"_blank\">The Rule of Four<\/a> <\/strong><\/em>by Ian Caldwell and Dustin Thomason.\u00a0 When they wrote this, they were fresh out of college, so their descriptions of academic life at Princeton really hit the nail on the head.\u00a0 Also, the book&#8217;s plot reminded\u00a0me of <em><strong>The Da Vinci Code<\/strong><\/em>, as the two main characters are close\u00a0to solving the mysteries of an ancient\u00a0Renaissance text that has confused\u00a0scholars for centuries.\u00a0 It&#8217;s fast-paced and there&#8217;s lots of code-breaking going on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\" \t http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|978934\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11379 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/historian2.jpg?resize=123%2C188&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"123\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a>Another favorite is <em><strong><a href=\" \t http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|978934\" target=\"_blank\">The Historian<\/a> <\/strong><\/em>by Elizabeth Kostova.\u00a0 This is a lengthy Draculian tome, so it&#8217;s catalogued in the Horror section.\u00a0 The book begins with\u00a0a young woman\u00a0exploring her father&#8217;s library when she discovers an ancient book with letters all addressed to &#8220;My dear and unfortunate successor.&#8221;\u00a0 Generations of researchers have risked their lives and their reputations trying to learn the truth about Vlad the Impaler, and to uncover this source of darkness and\u00a0rid the world of it powers.\u00a0 Now this young woman must decide whether to take up her father&#8217;s quest; her journey takes her from\u00a0 Ivy League libraries to archives in Istanbul and Eastern Europe.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t usually read Horror, but I couldn&#8217;t put it down.<\/p>\n<p>Just think about it.\u00a0 Celebrate National Library Week!
