{"id":11321,"date":"2011-04-14T06:00:53","date_gmt":"2011-04-14T12:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs2.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/?p=11321"},"modified":"2011-04-07T09:27:46","modified_gmt":"2011-04-07T15:27:46","slug":"a-cup-of-friendship-by-deborah-rodriguez","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/a-cup-of-friendship-by-deborah-rodriguez\/","title":{"rendered":"A Cup of Friendship by Deborah Rodriguez"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|2307619\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11329 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/cup-of-friendhsip.jpg?resize=197%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/cup-of-friendhsip.jpg?resize=197%2C300&amp;ssl=1 197w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/cup-of-friendhsip.jpg?w=329&amp;ssl=1 329w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Remember <em><strong>Kabul Beauty School<\/strong><\/em>, the memoir\u00a0by Deborah Rodriguez?\u00a0 Well, the author is back, this time with a fictional account which seems likely to have been\u00a0based, at least in part,\u00a0upon her own\u00a0life\u00a0experience as\u00a0co-owner of a coffee house in Kabul.\u00a0\u00a0At least that&#8217;s my bet, as the dialogue and place description both have an authentic feel to it.<\/p>\n<p>I enjoyed <a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|2307619\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>A Cup of Friendship<\/strong><\/em><\/a> on several levels.\u00a0 First of all, it&#8217;s just a good story.\u00a0 It&#8217;s got solid characterization with\u00a0some humor and some romance to help balance out the more tragic episodes.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also a reflection about relationships and\u00a0lasting friendships with women\u00a0of different faiths and cultures.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Finally, I think it helps those of us living in the West to better understand Afghan culture.\u00a0 We may not agree with the way women are treated there, but knowing some of the &#8220;why&#8221;\u00a0behind it certainly helps.<\/p>\n<p>As one might expect, being an American woman running a business in Kabul these days is not the easiest job in the world.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0However, the main character, Sunny, runs her coffee shop amidst bombs going off nearby, and still manages to create a welcoming haven for many ex-patriots.\u00a0 She also finds a way to do some good in her little corner of the world.\u00a0 This is a &#8220;feel good&#8221;
