{"id":10149,"date":"2011-01-24T06:00:33","date_gmt":"2011-01-24T12:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs2.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/?p=10149"},"modified":"2011-01-19T14:10:17","modified_gmt":"2011-01-19T20:10:17","slug":"lowcountry-summer-by-dorothea-benton-frank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/lowcountry-summer-by-dorothea-benton-frank\/","title":{"rendered":"Lowcountry Summer by Dorothea Benton Frank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|2243286\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10243\" title=\"lowcountry summer\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.davenportlibrary.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/lowcountry-summer1.jpg?resize=179%2C272&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"179\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a>Right about now, in the frigid frost of\u00a0 a typical Midwestern mid-winter, a nice hot beach read can come\u00a0to the rescue.\u00a0\u00a0 Fortunately, Dorothea Benton Frank&#8217;s<a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|2243286\" target=\"_blank\"> <strong><em>Lowcountry Summer<\/em><\/strong><\/a> fills the bill.\u00a0 Previous fans will find\u00a0familiar ground in this sequel to her bestselling novel, <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/search.prairiecat.info\/?itemid=|library\/marc\/PALS-unicorn|448943\" target=\"_blank\">Plantation<\/a>. <\/em><\/strong>Though Frank\u00a0resides in New York, she was born and raised on Sullivan&#8217;s Island, South Carolina, and her knowledge of the area and it&#8217;s cultural customs certainly\u00a0seem to\u00a0authenticate the\u00a0already\u00a0colorful characters.<\/p>\n<p>For some reason, I don&#8217;t know why, maybe it was all the references to the mouth-watering food they were eating , but the narrator\u00a0kept reminding me of Paula Deen.\u00a0 But then she&#8217;d reinvent herself when describing\u00a0her\u00a0laugh-out-loud love-life, and yet again when\u00a0trying to deal with a drunken sister-in-law\u00a0or comfort her grief-stricken brother.\u00a0 So there&#8217;s more than just sass and sex\u00a0 &#8212; there&#8217;s all the dynamics of complicated\u00a0family relationships with\u00a0some unexpected and poignant outcomes thrown in along the way.<\/p>\n<p>I think the thing I enjoyed most was how she used dialog for the narrator, Caroline.\u00a0 For example, Caroline might\u00a0respond verbally\u00a0one way\u00a0(to her 19 year old son in college who&#8217;s shacking up with an older single mom) but\u00a0she also lets the reader know her real thoughts, as shown here:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;But it&#8217;s nothing really.\u00a0 I just go over to her place for dinner, that&#8217;s all&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh. My.
