Get in the spirit!  Join our teen crafting tribe tomorrow at 3:00 as we design and create original masks using a variety of recycled materials.  We plan to invent our own new characters based off the varied tales of traditional African folklore.  We’ll probably even circle up at the end and show off our newfound masked identities.

The Teen Craft Tuesday programs are part of DPL’s Teen Summer Reading Program events and meet at the Fairmount St. Library on Tuesdays at 3:00.  The programs are free, all supplies are provided, and participants do not need to register.  For more information on this or any of our programs please call 563-326-7832.

Join us tomorrow at the Fairmount St. Library when we kick off our Summer Teen Craft programs!

We’ll start a great season of crafting by recycling old books and turning them into brand new journals.  You can use your creations to preserve the memories of your past vacations or upcoming journeys.  Everyone will leave the event with a free one-of-a-kind journal.  Hope to see you there!

The Teen Summer Reading Program is just around the corner!  This year’s theme is ‘You Are Here’ and the program takes place at all three Davenport Libraries from June 4th-August 4th, 2011.  YES!  IT STARTS THIS SATURDAY!

It’s super easy and all you have to do is write your name in our sign up book, grab a reading log, and track your points.  You can earn points for reading, listening to audio books, writing reviews for the teen blog, volunteering, attending library programs, even by starting a journal.

When you reach 500 points you can bring your log in and claim your half-way prize which is a FREE BOOK.  When you reach 1,000 points you’ve completed the program and by submitting your log you can grab your finishing prize which is a FREE T-SHIRT.  (All prizes will be distributed as supplies last.)  Oh, and another thing, once you’ve completed the teen reading program you can enter into one of 3 grand prize drawings for the following prizes:  a large stuffed animal tiger, or a color NOOK, or an iPod Touch!!!!!!

Are you making your summer plans already?  Be sure to sign up for the Teen Summer Reading Program (which runs June 4th – August 4th) and check out some of the great teen programs we have lined up this season.

We figure the best way to beat boredom this summer and exercise your creative muscles is to attend our awesome Teen Craft Tuesdays.

In keeping with the Summer Reading Program theme of ‘You Are Here’ each week will highlight a different craft inspired by various countries around the world.  The finale of the summer will be a good old fashioned American tie dye party!   All of the teen craft programs will be on Tuesdays from 3-4 at the Fairmount St.  Library.  Check out the entire line up:

6/7 – DIY Travel Journals
6/14 – X-treme Mask Making
6/21 – Bangles & Jangles Pop Tab Jewelry
6/28 – Thai String Creature Key Chains
7/5 – Build Your Own Boomerang
7/12 – Ice Marble Magnets
7/19 – Guatemalan Worry Dolls
7/26 – Tie Dye Party

Also, continuing all summer long is our ever popular Get Your Game On program.  This free play gaming program gives teens a chance to hang with their friends, play their favorite board games, and test their video gaming skills on one of 6 screens.  It meets every Wednesday from 3-5 at the Fairmount St. location.  We can’t think of a cooler way to stay cool this summer…join us!

Lastly, our special event of the summer is the 6th Annual Teen Battle of the Bands.  This year’s Battle will take place during the afternoon on Saturday, July 9th, at the Eastern Ave. Library.  Do you have what it takes to be the winning teen band for the Quad Cities this year? Our very own Library Idol?  Pick up your registration at any Davenport Library location starting June 1 and turn in before June 30.  Registration fee is $25.  All area teens welcome – groups or soloists; rock, blues, jazz, classical or country!

Stay tuned to the blog for all the latest teen program details.  Have a great summer and keep reading!

No more teen craft programs.  The Summer Reading Program ends on Saturday.  Grump.  Sigh.  How do we deal with this?

There’s only one way:  BEACH PARTY!

What better way to end the summer than with a friendly hula hoop contest, followed by a few rounds of musical beach towels, maybe a water balloon toss, a little beachball volleyball, and even some ice cream with sprinkles on top?

Can’t think of a better way.

So, your mission (should you choose to accept it) is to show up at the Fairmount Library at 3:00 tomorrow in your tie-dyed t-shirt (that you made at the library this summer), carrying your duct tape beach bag (that you made at the library this summer) with a picture of your balloon animal (that you made at the library this summer) in the seashell/button encrusted photo frame (that you made at the library this summer), with your stylin’ flip-flops on (that you made at the library this summer).  Oh, and bring a friend and make them wear the bleach pen decorated t-shirt (that you made at the library this summer).  Do it.  If you choose to accept this mission you will be rewarded lavishly.  Plus, you will make our day, probably our summer, and quite possibly even our year.  Forilla.  Do it!

What are you doing tomorrow afternoon?

Well, we are balloon sculpting at Fairmount from 3-5.

Probably making things like this:

Probably not making things like this:

But we can if you want.  YES!  It will be really easy to talk us into it.

That’s right!  We are smack dab in the middle of the Summer Reading Program.  One month down, one month to go.  If you haven’t signed up, now is the time to do so.  You can certainly start now and finish by the time July 31st rolls around.  Visit either DPL location, or even our brand new 3rd location on Eastern Ave.–which opens July 10th, to sign up and grab a reading log.  It’s really that simple.  Click here for the rest of the details.

So sign up!  And remember to claim your finishing prizes at the information desks when you’re done.  Those prizes are going fast!  Can’t wait to see who wins the Grand Prizes, too.
