YAC Battle of the Bands

United Way of the Quad City Area’s Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is accepting applications for bands wishing to compete in their Battle of the Bands on February 28, noon-5:00 at Mojo’s at the RME. The event is focused on spotlighting talented teens in the Quad Cities area while building awareness among high school students of 10,000 Hours Show Quad Cities (10KQC). The winner of the Battle will open the 10KQC concert at the Capitol Theatre on April 18th.

10KQC is a new program in the Quad Cities geared towards generating over 10,000 hours of volunteer service by local high school and college students. Students verifying 10 hours of volunteer service in the Quad Cities will be rewarded with a free ticket to a concert. Volunteer service is the only way to get a ticket to the event.

While the 10,000 Hours Show is already established in Iowa City and Des Moines, this will be the first year for the program in the Quad Cities. The 10KQC concert will feature Trippin Billies and Minus Six, as well as the Battle of the Bands winner.

Applicants may download an application at http://www.unitedwayqc.org/ or pick one up in Mojos Cafe.  All applications must be received no later than February 15, 2009.

Summer Highlight

August 11, 2008

It’s safe to say that summer is officially winding down, if not over already.  Schools are starting back up and the word ’homework’ is now part of many teens’ vocabulary again.  Ugh.  The good news is that DPL’s regular teen programs will be starting back up soon and there’s certainly fun to be had for all.  In the meantime, enjoy these picks of what many of us around here consider to be the highlight of the summer-the 3rd Annual Battle of the Bands.  It was, indeed, a rockin’ good time.

The above band pic is that of 3rd place winners, Outcasts of Eden.  They kicked off the night and even performed a cool Red Hot Chili Peppers cover.

The very popular Fire Sale, pictured above, won 2nd place.  They also put on a great show and the bass player sure has some cool tricks up his sleeve when it comes to entertaining a crowd.  Impressive.

And the winner….That One Band.  Yes, that’s their name and, yes, they played a song called That One Song.  These guys are from Eldridge and the fun they had on stage was quite contagious.  The race between first and second place bands was so close.  In the end, That One Band triumphed as the champion of DPL’s 2008 Battle of the Bands.

Congratulations to all the bands for putting on a terrific show.  All participants received cash prizes, a free t-shirt, and the chance to play two paid gigs sponsored by the Davenport Parks & Rec. Dept.  Hope to see them all on stage again next summer!

Cash prizes will be awarded the night of the Battle.  Plus, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place bands will have the chance to rock out at two PAID gigs over the summer, thanks to the city’s Parks & Rec. Dept.  For more info call the DPL Youth Services Dept. at 563-326-7900.

Metamorphosis Teen Summer Reading Program

June 4, 2008

The 2008 Teen Summer Reading Program has begun.  Come in to either library location to sign up and grab your log.  The theme for this year is Metamorphosis.  In spirit of the theme, we’ve lined up several cool teen programs designed to help transform the inner and outer you.   We’ll also be hosting a few Metamorphic Matinees with free pizza, several Anime Matinees with free popcorn, and don’t forget about the 3rd Annual Battle of the Bands!  Stay tuned for more details about each program.

Plus, signing up for the Teen Summer Reading Program is easy.  Just head to the Young Adult area in either library and look for the sign-up sheet.  Once you write down your name and email address (optional), be sure to pick up a log.  Inside the log you’ll find a list of various activities and their point values.  Yes, you can accrue points for more than just reading books.  Of course, reading is highly encouraged and you get one point per page.  In order to finish the program participants must accrue 1,000 points.  Pretty easy to do if you think about it, especially if you read a larger book like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, or a couple of the ever popular books that make up the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer.   Some of the other activities that will earn you points are listening to an audio book, reading to a child, starting a journal, writing a review, attending a concert, or visiting a museum or art gallery.

Once you accrue the 1,000 points, turn in your log at either Davenport Public Library to redeem your finishing prize.  This year the finishing prize is a free book.  We have a great selection of free books to choose from, even some graphic novels!  Plus, for completing the program, you’ll also get to enter into one of the Grand Prize drawings for either an iPod Shuffle, or tickets to Tony Hawk’s Boom Boom Huck Jam at the i wireless Center on July 30th.  Pretty sweet prizes!!  For further information, contact us at 563-326-7893.  We’ll be happy to answer any questions.  Have a great summer!
