Grand Prize Winners

Posted in Special Events, Teens | No Comments »

So, in case you haven’t seen the Grand Prize winning films here they are:

What’s Up Holmes? by Gavin Wright and Austin Bundy won the Viewer’s Choice Award and Best Comedy.  It’s hilarious AND has awesome effects.  Pac-Man.  Pac-Man.  And the next one here, Lots of Character by Shelby Bargren, won the Librarian’s Choice Award along with Best Original Film.  Please note:  the original song she chose is being blocked by YouTube, but played perfectly at the IMAX screening.  You should’ve been there! :)   You can still see all the hard work she put in and relish in the film’s keen artistic qualities.  Enjoy!

pre-party interviews with filmmakersred carpet interview

Above are the cast and crew of A Movie of Coolness.  They’re shown being interviewed as they enter the Putnam Museum & IMAX Theatre, and then as they walk the red carpet just prior to making their silver screen debut.  The group went home with their very own Oscar-like trophy we like to call the “Dewey” for Best Soundtrack.  Way to go!  Their movie certainly was cool!

voting for viewer's choice award

Here’s an action shot of the audience members voting for the Grand Prize Viewer’s Choice Award just after the screening on the balcony of the IMAX.  The winner ending up being What’s Up Holmes? by Gavin Wright & Austin Bundy.  The pair took home a Dewey and $100 for that award, plus they also won Best Comedy.  This was the second year the pair of Davenport teens won the Viewer’s Choice Award.  Once again, amazing work guys!!

winner of librarian's choice and best original film

Pictured here, holding the two Deweys she was awarded, is the talented Shelby Bargren of Moline.  Shelby won for Best Original Film and also the only other Grand Prize-Librarian’s Choice Award which also garnered her $100!  We were all very, very impressed with Shelby’s work and creativity.  Rumor has it she can’t wait ’til next year’s film fest rolls around.  Well, we can’t wait to see what Shelby and the rest of the teen filmmakers can come up with to top this year’s entries!  ‘Til then…

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Libraries Together 2nd Annual Teen Film Fest.  Thank you all for giving it a try and working so very hard.  We hope you all had a great time!

Spring Break

St. Augustine, Fl.

St. Augustine, Fl.

What better time to hit the beach than after a long, cold winter?  We just got back from St. Augustine, Fl., the nation’s oldest city.    It was founded in 1565, 42 years before Jamestown was colonized and 55 years before the Pilgrim’s landed at Plymouth Rock.   Originally planned in the late 1600’s by then Governor Gonzalo Méndez de Canzo, the Spanish influence is felt throughout all of old town — from the narrow streets to the balconied houses.  Of course the Spanish had been in Florida for awhile before this – Juan Ponce de Leon is credited with “discovering” Florida in 1513.

Living in the moment and not so much into history?  St. Augustine is on the Intracoastal Waterway and boasts great water sports – kayaking, sailing, parasailing to name a few.  And — there are 43 miles of pristine beaches.  Oh, yeah.   Sun, surf, surfing, frisbee, beach biking, skin baking, seashell hunting, sandcastle building.  What are you waiting for?

Looking for a great beach read while you’re there?

Libraries TogetherThe contest began in February, with a call for entries. Teens could choose from three themes, as related to their favorite book: outtakes, book trailer, or missing/unwritten scene. The libraries offered numerous opportunities for teens to use library technology to create their masterpieces. The workshops, training sessions, and events leading up to the red carpet event were created to celebrate “Teen Tech Week,” (March 8 – 14), a national initiative to encourage teens to learn technology and use it responsibly.

Hoot by Carl Hiaasen

Posted in Teens | No Comments »

hoot

Like so many terrific adult authors of late Carl Hiaasen also writes for young adults. I can’t tell you how much I love both his adult and YA books. Hoot is about a middle school boy who moves around alot and is not liking his new home in Florida all too well. Roy has been having almost daily run-ins with one of the school bullies. One day on the bus as Roy is being strangled by said bully, he notices a boy running through the neighborhood barefooted. The boy becomes a mystery to Roy who is determined to find out who he is and why he’s not in school. Added to this mystery is the vacant lot near Roy’s neighborhood. Strange things start happening right before construction is to take place on the site. Alligators in port-a-potties and strange looking burrows in the ground are just the start.

There are so many great things about Carl Hiaasen. He is incredibly funny (Kalo, za German dog trainer- yah). His main charaters are great heros (Roy very bravely stands up to said bully). And his stories are most absorbing (just what kind of fascinating personalities could be reflected in names such as Mullet Fingers, Chuck Muckle and Curly?). I’m particularly excited about his new YA book out soon called “Scat”. For now, enjoy this Newberry Honor book  – great fun!
