Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers is a novel set in the 1800’s during the California gold rush. It is about a prostitute named Angel who was sold to a brothel when she was a very young girl. She has hardened her heart to everything, but most entirely, men. But this all changes when God tells Michael Hosea, the male protagonist, he should take Angel as his wife. Redeeming Love is a love story between Michael and Angel; but it is also about the love between God and every character in the story.
When a friend first recommended this book to me I thought it looked like a sappy romance novel, which I tend to detest. But after reading the forward, I knew I had to read the rest of the book. Redeeming Love gripped me from beginning to end. It tore at my heart and yet it spoke so clear and vividly of God’s love for us, no matter what we have done or what we think of ourselves, God’s love doesn’t change. His love is so great that He cannot love us any more or any less, and it does not matter who we are, the vastness of His love is unimaginable. And this novel displayed this kind of love through Angel and Michael’s relationship; Michael decided he was going to love Angel no matter what she had done as a prostitute or no matter what she did to hurt him in some way. Francine Rivers does an amazing job demonstrating Godly love through her characters.
I have read this book four times and I am sure I will read it hundreds more before my life is through; it is my favorite book in the world. When someone asks me what book they should read, I always always ALWAYS suggest this book. My two sisters and mom have all read this book; my mom and one of my sisters read it in two days and the other read it in three. It truly is that fantastic.
If you are in any doubt questioning what book to read next, this is the one. I promise.
