The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2

Posted in Reviews, Summer Reading, Teens | 2 Comments »

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 opens in theaters August 8, 2008 (PG-13). The movie is based on Ann Brashares’ novel, The Second Summer of the Sisterhood. There are currently four books in the Traveling Pants series: Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Second Summer of the Sisterhood, Girls in Pants, and Forever in Blue. Ann Brashares’ characters, Carmen, Bridget, Tibby, and Lena, deal with issues that almost every teen faces (losing a loved one, mother-daughter relationships, romantic relationships, school, friendship and more). These four young women are complex, dynamic characters that will occupy a space in your heart as they move through their trials and triumphs wearing The Pants.  –aubreydawn

Plus, you can view the original movie, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, on Saturday, July 12th, at the Fairmount St. Library.  Showtime is at 2:00…free pizza, too!  This popular coming of age film will be shown as part of our Teen Summer Reading Program’s Metamorphic Matinees.  Hope to see you there!

Juno (2007)

Posted in Reviews, Teens | 2 Comments »

A comedy about growing up… and the bumps along the way.

“Juno,” directed by Jason Reitman, follows sixteen year old Juno MacGuff as she deals with her unplanned pregnancy from a sexual encounter with her best friend, Paulie Bleeker. Juno is a lovable character who is very much her own person. The soundtrack for “Juno” embodies Juno’s off-beat personality. The Moldy Peaches and Kimya Dawson (member of The Moldy Peaches) especially make the personality come alive.  –aubreydawn

Stardust by Neil Gaiman

Posted in Reviews, Teens | No Comments »

“There was once a young man who wished to gain his Heart’s Desire.”

The hero of Neil Gaiman’s Stardust, Tristran Thorn, promises to bring the prettiest girl in town, Victoria, a fallen star in exchange for a kiss (or even her hand in marriage) – his supposed heart’s desire. Tristran naively crosses the wall separating his normal, country town, Wall, from the magical world of Faerie and thus begins his quest. Unfortunately for Tristran, he is not the only one searching for the star. This grown-up fairy tale filled with unicorns, fairies, candles, witches and little furry men is is beautifully detailed, equipped with humor, and reads quickly. Stardust is the perfect escape for a hot, summer day.

Once you’re finished reading the book, be sure to check out the movie adaptation released last year, directed by Matthew Vaughn. The movie follows Gaiman’s book fairly closely (except for, you know, changing the lead character’s name: Tristran -> Tristan), and brings the adventure to life. Trist(r)an Thron is played by actor Charlie Cox. 127 min. PG-13  –aubreydawn
