Titanic Fact #13: Buried at Sea

Titanic Fact #13: Buried at Sea

Sonar image of Titanic wreckage

Much of the Titanic is not only underneath 2 miles of water, but is also buried in the seabed itself. When Titanic foundered and sank to the bottom of the north Atlantic, it plowed into the seabed at almost 35 miles per hour. The collision generated an undersea crater similar in shape to what a meteor would create when slamming into a planet.

Check out the Mystic Aquarium’s website for information on Titanic — 12,450 Feet Below. The interactive exhibit has recreations of the Titanic’s wreckage and a hands-on engine room for kids to explore. It looks pretty amazing, but I’m not sure I can justify the 18 1/2 hour trip to Connecticut to visit it.

Stop back tommorrow for more interesting Titanic Facts and mark your calendar for Titanic: 100 Years Later at the Fairmount Branch on April 12 at 6:30 p.m.
