As you may have heard, Wikipedia’s English language website is down until midnight tonight. The online encyclopedia is staging a 24-hour blackout in protest of anti-piracy legislation under consideration in Congress. The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA) are designed to restrict sales of pirated American products overseas. Supporters of the legislation say it is needed to protect intellectual property rights. Critics say that this legislation is a threat to free-speech rights. Other sites participating in the blackout are Reddit (a user-generated news site) and the blog, Boing Boing.
If lack of access to these sites has you in a bind, remember that the Davneport Public Library, as always, is an excellent source of information. You can stop in to any of our three locations, call us at 563-326-7832, or even text DPLKNOWS to 66746 and one of our highly-trained librarians will assit you.
