Who is Jonas Grumby?
Though rarely used after the series pilot, Jonas Grumby was the name of the Skipper on Gilligan’s Island.
You are not related to the Skipper; he is a fictional character from a TV show. But, if you are hard-pressed to fill out the real names on some of the branches of your family tree, in addition to regular weekday hours, the Richardson-Sloane Special Collections Center is open on the second Sunday of January, February, and March from 1-4pm for genealogy and local history research. Who knows? You might just find you have an ancestor in common with Alan Hale Jr. (the actor who portrayed the Skipper.)
Santa is coming to the Library again!
Have you been good this year? I bet you have, so come see Santa at the Main Library on Saturdays, December 1, 8, and 15! Santa will be at the Library from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Be sure to be in line no later than 2:15 p.m. Parents will have the opportunity to take their child’s photo with Santa; so don’t forget your camera! Everyone is invited to this FREE event.
For more holiday fun, check out these names for Santa from around the world. My favorite it the Chinese name for Santa, Dun Che Lao Ren, or “Christmas Old Man.”
Hot diggity dog!
July 23rd is National Hot Dog Day. So while you ponder the universal question of whether a hot dog is or isn’t a sandwich, enjoy these facts about Oscar Mayer’s Wienermobile.
- Vanity plates for the Wienermobile have included: YUMMY, OUR DOG, BIG BUN, LIL LINK, OH I WISH, WEENR, WNR MBLE, and BOLOGNA.
- The job title for the driver of the Wienermobile is called “hot dogger.”
- The horn of the vehicle can play the Wiener Jingle in 21 different genres from Cajun to Rap.
- In 2009 the Wienermobile was inadvertently turned down a dead end street and when the driver (or hot dogger) tried to turn around in a driveway she failed to put the vehicle in reverse and crashed it into a house. The fact that no one was injured makes me comfortable with the fact that the picture below caused me to giggle.
Speaking of hot dogs, the 25th Annual Bix Porch Party is August 2nd at 11 a.m. and in addition to hot dogs and lemonade, LIVE jazz music is on the menu as Don Estes and the Prairie Ramblers play on the porch of the Main Library (321 Main Street.) This is always a fun, family-oriented event and we hope to see you here.
