Santa is coming to the Library again!

Santa is coming to the Library again!

Have you been good this year?  I bet you have, so come see Santa at the Main Library on Saturdays, December 1, 8, and 15! Santa will be at the Library from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Be sure to be in line no later than 2:15 p.m. Parents will have the opportunity to take their child’s photo with Santa; so don’t forget your camera! Everyone is invited to this FREE event.

For more holiday fun, check out these names for Santa from around the world. My favorite it the Chinese name for Santa, Dun Che Lao Ren, or “Christmas Old Man.”

Deep Sea Spooks

Deep Sea Spooks

As if great white sharks and deadly box jellyfish weren’t enough to scare you out of the briny deep:  Did you know that there are also goblins and vampires in the sea? Well, goblin Sharks and vampire Squid, actually. While they look terrifying, neither poses a threat to humans, unless you consider inducing nightmares a threat. Enjoy the video clips of goblin sharks and vampire squids….if you dare.

For some fun spookiness,  come to the Davenport  Halloween Parade on October 31st starting at 7:00 PM and see our giant Libby balloon (weather permitting.) Click here for parade route.

Happy Halloween from the Davenport Public Library!

Candy Corn: Love it or hate it?

Candy Corn: Love it or hate it?

Fall is here and the season of candy corn is upon us. Candy corn is one of those polarizing seasonal confections like Peeps that many seem to feel strongly about. Some revel in its sweet honey flavor and bright colors while others abhor everything about it.  So what do you think?

How do you feel about candy corn?

Now let us put our differences aside and learn some interesting candy corn facts; because, at the end of the day, who among us hasn’t donned yellow, orange, and white fangs at one time or another.

  • October 30th is National Candy Corn Day.
  • Candy corn has been around for over 120 years.
  • 20 million pounds of the candy are sold annually.
  • Hershey’s Kisses, M&Ms, and Oreos have come in limited edition candy corn flavors.
  • Each candy corn kernel contains approximately 3.57 calories.
  • Candy corn is not a vegan food. It contains gelatin and/or egg whites.

Whether you love candy corn or can’t stand it, we are in the thick of Halloween candy season, so remember: Dental care books can be found at the Davenport Public Library under call number 617.6.

Hooray for hairy feet!

Hooray for hairy feet!

Kick off your shoes, eat a couple of breakfasts, and celebrate! In recognition of the shared birthday of hobbits Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, September 22nd is Hobbit Day which has been in observance for over 30 years.

What can you do to celebrate Hobbit Day? Check out these ideas for a Hobbit Day party. Find out your hobbit name with this nifty Hobbit Name Generator. Stop in the library to check out a J.R.R. Tolkien novel or borrow one of our DVDs of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. And don’t forget to tell them Cora Sandybanks of Frogmorton sent ya.
