Santa is coming to the Library again!

Santa is coming to the Library again!

Have you been good this year?  I bet you have, so come see Santa at the Main Library on Saturdays, December 1, 8, and 15! Santa will be at the Library from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Be sure to be in line no later than 2:15 p.m. Parents will have the opportunity to take their child’s photo with Santa; so don’t forget your camera! Everyone is invited to this FREE event.

For more holiday fun, check out these names for Santa from around the world. My favorite it the Chinese name for Santa, Dun Che Lao Ren, or “Christmas Old Man.”

Deep Sea Spooks

Deep Sea Spooks

As if great white sharks and deadly box jellyfish weren’t enough to scare you out of the briny deep:  Did you know that there are also goblins and vampires in the sea? Well, goblin Sharks and vampire Squid, actually. While they look terrifying, neither poses a threat to humans, unless you consider inducing nightmares a threat. Enjoy the video clips of goblin sharks and vampire squids….if you dare.

For some fun spookiness,  come to the Davenport  Halloween Parade on October 31st starting at 7:00 PM and see our giant Libby balloon (weather permitting.) Click here for parade route.

Happy Halloween from the Davenport Public Library!

Know when to fold ‘em

Know when to fold ‘em

World Origami Days span October 24-November 11. Wonder why it is 2 1/2 weeks long? October 24 is the birthdate of Lillian Oppenheimer, the founder of the first origami group in America and was chosen as the date for American Origami Day.  November 11 is the date on which Japan celebrates their Origami Day. In order to unify the celebrations, OrigamiUSA created World Origami Days.

So why not try your hand at some origami creations? The Library has tons of books on origami for people of all skill levels, so why not give it a shot? I will even though I usually can’t even manage a proper crane.

Hot diggity dog!

Hot diggity dog!

July 23rd is National Hot Dog Day. So while you ponder the universal question of whether a hot dog is or isn’t a sandwich, enjoy these facts about Oscar Mayer’s Wienermobile.

  • Vanity plates for the Wienermobile have included: YUMMY, OUR DOG, BIG BUN, LIL LINK, OH I WISH, WEENR, WNR MBLE, and BOLOGNA.
  • The job title for the driver of the Wienermobile is called “hot dogger.”
  • The horn of the vehicle can play the Wiener Jingle in 21 different genres from Cajun to Rap.
  • In 2009 the Wienermobile was inadvertently turned down a dead end street and when the driver (or hot dogger) tried to turn around in a driveway she failed to put the vehicle in reverse and crashed it into a house. The fact that no one was injured makes me comfortable with the fact that the picture below caused me to giggle.

Speaking of hot dogs, the 25th Annual Bix Porch Party is August 2nd at 11 a.m.  and in addition to hot dogs and lemonade, LIVE jazz music is on the menu as Don Estes and the Prairie Ramblers play on the porch of the Main Library (321 Main Street.) This is always a fun, family-oriented event and we hope to see you here.
