Banned Website Awareness Day

Banned Website Awareness Day

Today is Banned Website Awareness Day. The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) has designated this day as an opportunity to raise awareness of the negative impact of overly restrictive Internet filtering on student learning. The Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA), enacted by Congress in 2000, is often cited as the reason for restrictive filtering in schools, but the AASL argues that much of this filtering goes beyond the CIPA requirements.

For an interesting take on the effects of restrictive filtering, read A Tale of Two Students from American Libraries.

What is your take on the issue? Does restrictive Internet filtering protect students or hamper them? At what age, if any, should Internet filtering be used or discontinued?
