New Non-Fiction Book Club at DPL!

New Non-Fiction Book Club at DPL!

What do art theft, forest fires, chemistry, and murder have in common? If you said things that I participated in during my college years, you are no longer my friend (but you are also not very far off the mark.) All kidding aside, these are some of the subjects of books that will be discussed in Davenport Public Library’s new non-fiction book club, “Truth Be Told.” The goal of Truth Be Told Book Club is to offer a variety of books that span the Dewey Decimal System. This is a great group to join if you currently a member of another book club and you’d like to branch out, or if you are new to book clubs and are a fan of non-fiction. If you’re curious about the titles we’ll be reading, I have images of the book jackets below.

Spaces are limited and registration is required for this FREE book club. Call 563.326.7832 or visit www.davenportpubliclibrary.com to register.

Let’s cut up some books at the library!

Let’s cut up some books at the library!

No, I am not suggesting that you to vandalize library property; I am inviting you to create art.  The Davenport Public Library will be offering a “Book Sculpting” program on March 17 at 2:00 p.m at the Fairmount Branch. Book Sculpting is a great way to repurpose old books into 3-D art. This program is free. Registration is required and space is limited, so sign up soon! In the meantime, check out some breathtaking examples of book sculptures by Brian Dettmer and Kylie Stillman.

Bug juice

Bug juice

Did you know that the common food additive Carmine is made from boiled cochineal insect carcasses? Carmine is added to certain flavors of juice, candy, and yogurt to enhance their redness. It is also a source of color for many red-hued lipsticks. This fact prompted me to check the label on my lipgloss and guess what? I’m wearing bug juice.

Need something to get your mind off the icky? Browse our “NEW” section at the Davenport Public Library. We have an assortment of new general fiction, as well as plenty of new romance, science fiction, and mystery.
