Titanic Fact #9: I like big boats and I cannot lie.

Titanic Fact #9: I like big boats and I cannot lie.

Relative size of the Titanic (pictured in black.)

King Edward VII, after whom the Edwardian Era is named, liked big things. His mother, Queen Victoria, was famous for being respectable and tasteful. Edward liked to encourage excess in all that he did. This had a big impact on fashion. Under Edward’s reign, curves became highly fashionable, and women were encouraged to be a bit bigger than they had in other times in history.

If you’re curious about the fashion of the Edwardian Era, visit the Davenport Public Library’s Richardson-Sloane Special Collections Center. They have an enormous collection of both print and digital images dating from the 1880s to present and access to various digital image archives.
