Many of the men working in the boiler and engine rooms chose to stay on the ship even though they knew it was sinking. They made this choice because they knew that if they stopped working, the ship would lose electrical power. The passengers’ best chance of being saved rested on how long the Titanic could keep its lights on and be visible to other ships.
